Angela Carini withdrew from her bout against Algeria's Imane Khelif after only 46 seconds. The Italian was in tears after the end of the fixture.
Carini, who is a former world championships silver medalist, competed in her second edition of the Olympics in Paris and faced Khelif in the Round of 16 of the women's 66kg event.
The Algerian previously landed an early right hand on the Italian, who had her headgear checked. Moments later, Khelif attempted to land a series of punches before Carini signalled that she did not want to continue.
After her withdrawal, Angela Carini fell to her knees and was in tears, refusing to shake hands with Khelif, who later patted her on the back.
The Algerian was previously disqualified from the 2023 World Championshipsin New Delhi just before her final bout against Yang Liu after failing a gender test.
The International Boxing Association recently re-released their statement on Khelif and another boxer being disqualified, that read:
"On 24 March 2023, IBA disqualified athletes Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif from the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships New Delhi 2023. This disqualification was a result of their failure to meet the eligibility criteria for participating in the women’s competition, as set and laid out in the IBA Regulations."
Angela Carini previously competed in the women's welterweight event at Tokyo 2020 where she lost to Chinese Taipei's Chen Nien-chin in the round of 16.
