Harry Maguire: A Brief Biography

Harry Maguire is an English professional footballer who plays as a center-back for the England national team and Premier League side Manchester United. He is also the captain of United and is renowned to be a strong and authoritative defender.

Early Life

Harry Maguire was born on March 5, 1993, in Sheffield, England. He began his youth football career at Sheffield United, where he progressed through the ranks and made his first-team debut at the age of 18.

While pursuing his football career, Maguire also received an education. He attended St. Mary's Catholic High School in Chesterfield and earned a degree in sports science from Sheffield Hallam University.

Club Career

Maguire started his professional career with Sheffield United, where he progressed through the youth academy and made his first-team debut in 2011. He went on to make over 100 appearances for the club, establishing himself as a key player in the team's defense.

In July 2014, Maguire signed for Hull City, who were playing in the English Premier League at the time. He played a pivotal role in the team's promotion back to the top-flight in the 2015-16 season and also helped them reach the 2017 League Cup final, which they lost to Manchester United.

Maguire's impressive performances at Hull City earned him a move to Leicester City in June 2017, for a fee of £17 million, a record transfer fee for a defender at the time. He quickly became a fan favorite at Leicester and helped the team finish in the top half of the Premier League in both of his seasons at the club.

In August 2019, Maguire joined Manchester United in a transfer worth £80 million, another record transfer fee for a defender. He became an instant starter for the team and was named the club's captain in January 2020. Maguire played a key role in Manchester United's third-place finish in the 2019-20 Premier League season and also helped the team reach the final of the Europa League in 2021.

Since the arrival of Erik ten Hag in the 2022-23 season, Maguire lost his starting spot due to his poor form and inconsistencies however he won the Carabao Cup in February 2023 when Manchester United beat Newcastle 2-0 in the final.

International Career

Maguire's first appearance for the England senior team came on 11 October 2017 in a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania. He played the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory. He continued to play in England's remaining World Cup qualifiers, helping the team to secure their place in the 2018 World Cup.

Maguire was also named in the England squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He played in every minute of England's seven games in the tournament, helping them to reach the semi-finals where they were beaten by Croatia. Maguire scored his first international goal in the quarter-finals against Sweden, heading in a corner to put England 1-0 up.

Maguire has continued to be a regular member of the England squad since the World Cup, playing in the UEFA Nations League and European Championship qualifiers. He was also named in the England squad for the 2020 European Championship and played a key role in helping the team reach the final, where they were beaten by Italy. His impressive performance throughout the tournament earned him a spot in the UEFA Euro 2020 Team of the Tournament.

On November 15th, 2021, Maguire scored the opening goal in a 10–0 victory over San Marino. This made him England’s highest goal-scoring defender in history with seven goals.

He also featured in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar where he made his 50th appearance for England as well. Even though they were knocked out in the quarter-finals after a 2-1 defeat to France, his performances were good enough to make the 2022 FIFA World Cup Team of the Tournament.
