Buddy Matthews

Matthew Adams is an Australian professional wrestler signed with NJPW. He is best known for his work with WWE as Buddy Murphy or Murphy. He is a former WWE Cruiserweight Champion.

Professional Wrestling Career

Early Years (2007-2013)

Adams worked for a few independent promotions such as PCW and MCW before signing with WWE.

WWE

NXT (2013-2017)

Adams signed with WWE and started working with NXT. He spent his early days teaming up with different superstars before teaming up with Wesley Blake. In 2014, Adams formed a tag team and spent most of his time in tag matches.

Alexa Bliss performed the role of manager for the team. In 2015, Blake and Murphy became the number one contender for the tag team titles. On NXT, they defeated The Lucha Dragons to win the NXT Tag Team Championship. The reign ended after 219 days by The Vaudevillians.

After losing the titles and Bliss being drafted to the main roster, the team disbanded. Adams went on as a singles competitor in NXT and lost to Shinsuke Nakamura. Adams took a long hiatus before joining the main roster.

205 Live and Disciple (2018-2021)

After losing over 25 pounds, Adams joined the 205 division. In January, he took part in the cruiserweight championship tournament but lost in the semi-finals. Adams started a feud with Mustafa Ali, which he won. After winning several matches, Adams challenged the champion. At Super Showdown in Melbourne, Murphy defeated Cedric Alexander to win the WWE Cruiserweight Championship. At WrestleMania 35, he lost the title to Tony Nese.

After Superstar Shakeup, he went to SmackDown. Throughout his time on SmackDown, he faced the likes of Roman Reigns, Daniel Bryan, Mustafa Ali, and Apollo Crews. At Draft, he was drafted to RAW. He developed a winning streak but failed to challenge the United States Champion, AJ Styles.

In November, he began his rivalry with Aleister Black, where he lost. In January, he aligned himself with Seth Rollins and became his Disciple. On RAW, they won the RAW Tag Team Championship from The Viking Raiders. They lost the title to The Street Profits on RAW.

Murphy began a rivalry with The Mysterios, along with Seth Rollins. The rivalry went for over six months and crossed from RAW to SmackDown. The storyline continued when after Aalyah kissed Murphy. After being humiliated by Rollins and helping Aalyah, Murphy turned on Rollins and attacked him. Murphy defeated Rollins on SmackDown before Survivor Series. The storyline was ended before the event. In March, Murphy returned to join forces with Rollins. It was his last appearance with the company.

NJPW (2021-Present)

In October, Adams announced he signed with NJPW as Buddy Matthews. At the Battle in the Valley event, Matthews lost to Okada.

AEW (2022-Present)

In 2022, Matthews made his Dynamite debut and joined the House of Black. At Revolution, the House of Black defeated Death Triangle and Erick RedBeard.
