Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's introduction of Terastallization and Tera Types also heralded the arrival of Tera Shards. With enough of these shards of the same type, trainers can head to the Treasure Eatery in Medali (after defeating the gym leader Larry) and use them to change the Tera Type of a Pokemon (with the exception of Ogerpon and Terapagos, who have set Tera Types).

So, what are the best ways to get more Tera Shards in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet? A few options are available to players, some more productive than others. Whatever the case, for fans who are hoping to farm Tera Shards, it's not a bad time to examine the best methods. Read on to know more.

The best ways to get Tera Shards in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

1) Beating 3+ Star Tera Raids

Entering and completing Tera Raid battles of 3-star difficulty or higher will reward Tera Shards based on the difficulty tier. The tougher the Tera Raid that trainers complete, the more Tera Shards they can collect. However, the Tera Shard variety is often randomized, so repeated Tera Raid completions may be necessary.

Tera Shard Quantities Based On Difficulty

  • 3-Star Raids: Two Shards
  • 4-Star Raids: Three Shards
  • 5-Star Raids: Four Shards
  • 6-Star Raids: Six Shards
  • 7-Star Raids: Varies depending on the raid boss' loot table

Additionally, if players have the Glimmering Charm (obtained from Jacq after completing the Kitakami Pokedex) in their inventory, they'll be able to increase their Tera Shard yields from raids to the following quantities:

  • 4-Star Raids: Five Shards
  • 5-Star Raids: Ten Shards
  • 6-Star Raids: 12 Shards

2) Academy Ace Tournament Battles

Once Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players have completed the story of the base game, they'll be invited to the Academy Ace Tournament to face off against some of Paldea's best and brightest. However, this tournament can be repeated after its first completion, and among its rewards, trainers can obtain randomized Tera Shards.

The Academy Ace Tournament is time-consuming, so this may not be the fastest way to acquire Tera Shards, but it's still a solid method all the same.

3) Defeating Wild Stellar Tera Type Pokemon (Stellar Tera Shards)

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Indigo Disk DLC introduced a 19th Tera Type known as Stellar, and its shards are a bit tougher to source compared to its counterparts. Fortunately, trainers who know the Blueberry Academy's Terarium can farm Stellar Tera Type Pokemon by defeating them or catching them repeatedly and traveling between their spawn points (which can be found in the image above).

Each biome in Blueberry Academy's Terarium contains three Stellar Tera Type Pokemon each, and trainers can easily create routes between the biomes and defeat these creatures to collect Stellar Tera Shards quite easily.

4) Using the Item Printer

After spending 200 BP in the League Club Room at Blueberry Academy in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, trainers gain access to the Item Printer. By inputting TM materials and BP into the machine, players can effectively run a roulette to receive various rewards including Tera Shards. The Item Printer can also be upgraded to improve the rewards, including access to extra Master Balls.

Unfortunately, Tera Shards don't have a high chance of appearing from the Item Printer (approximately 0.9% for Tera Shards and 0.5% for Stellar Tera Shards). The good news is that an exploit exists (though it may be patched out later) that allows trainers to bend the RNG of the machine to their advantage. Below, players can find the steps to trick the Item Printer into doing their bidding:

  1. Ensure you have a Master Ball-level Item Printer, then speak to the lady near the Item Printer. When the prompt "I want to print something" appears, exit to your dashboard and go to your settings.
  2. Select system settings, then system, then date and time.
  3. Disable "synchronize clock via internet" and then choose date and time.
  4. Change your date and time to correspond to the item you would like to get from the Item Printer (the Tera Shard times will be posted below this list of steps).
  5. Return to the game as quickly as possible and wait until the appropriate time (also shown below) corresponding to your desired Tera Shard, then choose to print something. The timing is tricky as the screen should fade to black on the exact second corresponding to the Tera Shard, but using a stopwatch can be helpful.
  6. On the item print screen, select your TM materials as you normally would. The materials won't make a difference in which items are produced.
  7. If performed correctly, the Item Printer should use the exact time you counted down to produce the Tera Shards of your choosing.

For Tera Shards, in particular, you'll need to activate a Double Item Bonus beforehand. This bonus is guaranteed to trigger if players set their date to 01/05/2024 and activate the Item Printer at 20 hours, 08 minutes, and 18 seconds (20:08:18). Once the bonus is active, players can then change their date and time to their corresponding Tera Shard.

Since it takes a few seconds to return to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet from the Switch date/time settings, it's a good idea for players to set themselves about a minute's worth of extra time, then return to the game and count down to the appropriate moment before picking the "I want to print something" dialogue option.

5) Picking Them Up as Items

While adventuring through Paldea in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, trainers may notice glowing red Poke Balls in the environment. When picked up, these Poke Balls can contain various goodies, including Tera Shards on occasion.

This isn't the best method for necessarily farming Tera Shards in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet since the item drops take time to find and don't contain many shards, but it's not a bad way to supplement one's supply while exploring.
