Introduced in generation six, with the Pokemon X and Y games, Amaura is a dual type rock and ice Pokemon. It is the base evolution of Aurorus and is one of generation six’s fossil Pokemon as it needs to be resurrected from a Sail Fossil. Amaura is classified by the Pokedex as the “Tundra Pokemon” which points to the biome it originally lived in. This guide will showcase Amarua’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Amaura.
About Amaura
As a generation six Pokemon, Amaura first appears in the X and Y season of the anime with the episode Coming Back into the Cold!. This episode also showcased the unique quality of fossil Pokemon and how Amaura and Tyrunt need to be resurrected from their respective fossils. Amaura is part of a two stage evolution line and will evolve into Aurorus upon reaching level 39 as long as it was leveled up at nighttime. The Pokedex states that Amaura walked the earth over 100 million years ago.

Appearance
Amaura is a light blue, quadrupedal, sauropod-like Pokemon and it looks like a much smaller version of the long-necked dinosaur, the brachiosaurus. While most of Amaura’s body is light blue and white, it has a colorful crest on top of its head that resembles the colors of the Aurora Borealis. Not only that, it has two gem-like shapes on either side of its body with a small tail. Even though Amaura is small for a dinosaur, it is still average height for a Pokemon at 4 feet and 3 inches, or 1.3 meters, tall.
Behavior
Amaura is shown to be a calm Pokemon that prefers the quiet and cold environment of the tundra. As a Pokemon that is meant to represent a dinosaur, Amaura is said to have existed over 100 million years ago. The Pokedex mentions that it originally lived in a cold land to avoid violent predators like its counterpart, Tyrantrum. It also states that Amaura can create auroras in the night sky by whinnying.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Amaura has relatively balanced base stats but most of its points went into its health pool. Not only that, it can be dangerous as its abilities, Refrigerate and Snow Warning, can boost the damage of its moves in battle. However, it has a slow speed stat and a weak defensive type which can make Amaura weak in prolonged battles. As a dual type rock and ice Pokemon, Amaura is 2x weak to ground, rock, water, and grass type moves and 4x weak to fighting and steel type moves. It is immune to no types but is resistant and will take half damage from normal, flying, poison, and ice type moves.
Shiny Amaura
It is easy to distinguish between a Shiny Amaura and its regular form. The main color of Shiny Amaura’s body is swapped from a light blue color to a white. The color palette swap from a regular Amaura and Shiny Amaura inverts as regular Amaura is typically blue with a white underbelly, and vice versa for Shiny Amaura. The crest on top of Amaura’s head is also a little paler in Shiny Amaura’s colors while its gem and eyes are now a bright blue colour. Like all shiny Pokemon, Shiny Amaura gains a starry animation upon entering battle.
Best Moveset
As a base evolution Pokemon, Amaura is exclusively limited to LC (Little Cup) brackets of competitive play. In this format it only has to face other base evolution Pokemon which can help overlook some of its weaknesses. You will want to carefully consider between Refrigerate and Snow Warning depending on the rest of your team as well as the role you want Amaura to fill. Refrigerate will power up your normal type moves and Snow Warning can ensure Blizzard does not miss while also boosting ice type moves. Consider running Hyper Voice/Blizzard, Earth Power, Thunderbolt, and Hyper Beam/Ancient Power. Hyper Voice/Blizzard are interchangeable depending on which ability you pick, Earth Power and Thunderbolt are for type coverage, and finally Hyper Beam/Ancient Power again depends on which ability you picked. You will want the normal type moves if your Amaura has Refrigerate, and you will want the ice/rock type moves if you have Snow Warning.

How to Catch Amaura in Pokemon Go
Unfortunately, Amaura is not currently available to encounter in Pokemon Go. While the developers have released some generation six Pokemon and even a few generation eight Pokemon, it appears that Amaura is not currently available in the game. It is likely the developers are considering how to include the Sail Fossil item into the game and its interaction with the game mechanics has prevented them from releasing Amaura. Once Amaura is released, you can find Amaura near parking lots, cities, hiking trails, or even near Pokestops with a Glacial Lure activated. To evolve your Amaura into an Aurorus, it will likely require 50 Amaura candies.
Trivia
- Of all the Pokemon available in the franchise, no other Pokemon has the same type combination as Amaura and its evolution line.
- The inspiration for Amaura’s design is likely based on sauropod dinosaurs, specifically the Amargasaurus as its name implies it was this particular dinosaur.
- The name Amaura is a combination of the words Amargasaurus and aurora.

FAQ
How do you evolve Amaura?
You can evolve your Amaura into an Aurorus by having it reach level 39 at night time. If you happen to reach this level threshold during the day, your next level with Amarua at night time will still grant you the opportunity to evolve Amaura. Just allow the evolution animation to play without pressing the “B” button and you will end up with an Aurorus.
Is Amaura a Mythical Pokemon?
Amaura is not a mythical Pokemon and it is not even a legendary Pokemon. Mythical Pokemon are typically event exclusive Pokemon and Amaura is simply available by playing through the base game. It is fairly unique as you will typically only encounter one opportunity to obtain Amaura each playthrough.
Which Pokemon is 698 in the Pokedex?
Amaura is the 698th Pokemon in the Pokedex. The Pokedex will label every Pokemon with a number typically sequentially with its evolutions. However, Pokemon that were released in a prior generation will gain priority over sequential order with evolutions. Therefore, you can use this number to remind yourself which generation a Pokemon was released in.
Conclusion
Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Tundra Pokemon”. While Amaura and its evolution line has not had the biggest impact on competitive play, it is fairly unique as it reintroduced the fossil mechanic to generation six. Even though their type does not exactly do any favors for Amaura or Aurorus, they are unique as the only rock and ice type Pokemon in the franchise. Reserve a slot on your team for Amaura if you want a high health, offensive rock and ice type Pokemon.
