Amoonguss is a grass and poison-type Pokemon that first appeared in the Unova Region during the fifth generation of the main series of Pokemon games. Amoonguss is a carnivore, with its Pokedex implying it preys on humans. For this reason, Amoonguss appears to be inspired by the mushroom monsters from William Hope Hodgson’s short story, The Voice in the Night, a story that inspired the Japanese cult film, Matango. The Pokemon, Amoongus, entered public discussion more recently due to its name-bearing similarities to the game Among Us. This led to the meme asking “What is the 591st Pokemon” becoming popular within the game’s theme of suspicion. Other versions of this meme include calling the 591st Pokemon ‘sus’ due to its name.

Appearance of Amoonguss
Amoonguss is a Pokemon that resembles a mushroom with a mushroom cap and shield-like arms which both resemble PokeBalls. Amoonguss has a mostly white body, with slight warts on both its main body and its mushroom cap. Underneath its cap, Amoonguss is generally pear-shaped, with thin arms leading into its shield-like Poke Ball detailing. Amoonguss has a round, donut-shaped pink mouth.
Behavior of Amoonguss
Amoonguss uses the PokeBall patterns on its arms to lure in prey, though it doesn't work too well for most Pokemon. Amoonguss will blow poisonous spores at its opponents, which will grow into mushrooms if not washed off. Amoonguss rarely moves, staying nearby dropped PokeBalls, mainly in the long grass. In the long grass, Amoonguss only has its mushroom cap visible, making it look like a Pokeball, with Amoonguss also tending to stay near water. Amoonguss is a carnivore, with its Pokedex implying it preys on humans. For this reason, Amoonguss appears to be inspired by the mushroom monsters from William Hope Hodgson’s short story, The Voice in the Night.
Strengths and Weaknesses
While Amoonguss has a very low-speed stat, Amoonguss has a high HP stat, with the rest of its stats being pretty uniform. As grass and poison-type, Amoonguss is resistant to fighting, water, grass, electric, and Fairy-type attacks and is weak to flying, fire, psychic, and ice-type Pokemon. Amoonguss also has good defensive typing and mixed bulk makes it a reliable defensive pivot, though Amoonguss is unfortunately very passive because of its pitifully low-Speed stat and generally low offenses.
Pokemon 591
The Pokemon 591 meme debuted at around the same time Among Us picked up traction on Twitch in 2020. With its name, Amoongus bearing similarities to the game Among Us, the meme of asking “What is the 591st Pokemon” becoming popular within the game’s theme of suspicion. Other versions of this meme include calling the 591st Pokemon ‘sus’ due to its name. While this meme is a bit old at this point, it can still be referenced when discussing 2020’s hit indie game.
Best Moveset
It's good defensive typing as well as its mixed bulk make Amoonguss a reliable defensive pivot. This also works well because of its ability, Regenerator, which gives Amoonguss one-third of its maximum health upon switching out. Amoonguss is unfortunately very passive because of its pitifully low-Speed stat and generally low offenses. The move, Spore is one of the main reasons to use Amoonguss, since it allows Amoonguss to put any non-grass-type Pokemon to sleep. Giga Drainworks as a consistent STAB (same-type attack bonus) move, which can also help Amoonguss regain some health. Hidden Power Fire is used to hit steel-type Pokemon, a type that is otherwise difficult for Amoonguss to fight. Within its type difficulties, Amoonguss is at an extreme disadvantage when fighting against ice, fire, psychic, and flying-type Pokemon. Finally, Clear Smog allows Amoonguss to be used as setup fodder. However, Sludge Bomb also works well for this final spot as a poison-type STAB move.

Hidden Power Fire | Clear Smog |
How to catch Amoonguss in Pokemon Go?
Amoonguss and its pre-evolution Foongus can be found in areas with lots of flora, just like any other grass-type Pokemon. These mostly apply to forests and wooded areas, though lawns can still work, though less effectively.
