Are Galarian Legendary birds good in Pokemon GO PvP?

There are three Galarian Legendary birds in Pokemon GO: Galarian Articuno, Galarian Moltres, and Galarian Zapdos. All of these Pokemon are strong in their own right, but unfortunately, some of them aren't as viable as their counterparts with the same typing.

You can have an encounter with Galarian Legendary birds using your free Daily Adventure incense. However, getting one is difficult given the scarce spawns and abysmally low catch rates.

Read on to learn about the viability of the Galarian Legendary birds in Pokemon GO PvP battles.

Are the Galarian Legendary birds worth using in Pokemon GO PvP?

Galarian Articuno

Galarian Articuno is very different from the Kanto version of this Pokemon in that it is not an Ice and Flying-type. Galarian Articuno is a Psychic and Flying-type Pokemon. Lugia is another Legendary monster that shares a similar elemental typing. You might be wondering if the Galar variant of Articuno is any better than Lugia and the answer is a strong resounding no.

Galarian Articuno does fall by the wayside, mainly because it does not necessarily have the best moveset that would push it past Lugia. This applies to both Raid Battles and PvP. One of the main noticeable differences is Galarian Articuno’s lack of bulk stat.

However, if you’re lacking a decent Psychic or Flying-type, this bird could be a viable substitute. Similar to Lugia in Pokemon GO, it will have the same weaknesses as it will perform poorly against the following elemental typings:

  • Dark
  • Electric
  • Ghost
  • Ice
  • Rock

It resists the following elemental typings:

  • Fighting
  • Ground
  • Grass
  • Psychic

Unfortunately, Galarian Articuno does get outclassed by Lugia in pretty much every single league in the GO Battle League. When it comes to the Great League, if you are lucky enough to get one under 1500 CP, there are still going to be better options out there that have the Flying typing or the Psychic typing. So this Pokemon really doesn't have that many uses within Pokemon GO.

Galarian Moltres

Moltres is arguably the best out of the three among the Kanto Legendary birds. However, it is the worst out of the three Galarian versions of these birds in Pokemon GO. Galarian Moltres does not have the fire typing but instead, it has a Dark and Flying typing combo. Unfortunately for Galarian Moltres, it's not the greatest out of all the Pokemon that belong to either of these types.

The real issue with Galarian Moltres is its stats. It bears an inferior attack stat compared to other Galarian Legendary birds and has a much higher defense stat than them. The base stats of Galarian Moltres are 202 for attack, 231 for defense, and 207 for stamina.

Overall these are pretty decent and the high defense stat makes this Pokemon pretty bulky. Unfortunately, bulk is not going to make up for the lack of damage. This makes the monster useless, especially because the moveset is not particularly strong like other Dark and Flying types.

Moltres from the region of Galar gets outclassed by one particular Pokemon and that is the Legendary Yveltal. Yveltal has the same exact typing and is much stronger than Galarian Moltres in just about every aspect of Pokemon GO. With access to Oblivion Wing, Yveltal is always the better option among the two.

Galarian Zapdos

Galarian Zapdos is probably the only useful Galarian Legendary bird in Pokemon GO. Much like the other Galarian Legendary birds, this Pokemon does not share the same typing as its Kanto version. Instead, it has dual Fighting and Flying elemental typing.

The base stats of this Pokemon are where it shines over the other Galarian Legendary birds. It has an attack stat of 252, a defense stat of 189, and a stamina stat of 207. This alone shows that this Galarian Pokemon in Pokemon GO has the potential to overwhelm your opponents in the GO Battle League.

Overall, all three of these Pokemon have been added to Pokemon GO and mostly serve the role of trophies for collectors. Sadly, they are not that good when it comes to combat. If Niantic gives them better moves, Galarian Zapdos could instantly become one of the top-tier Fighting-type Pokemon. However, that's unlikely to happen, so players shouldn't get their hopes up.
