Introduction
Aurorus is a rock and ice-type Pokemon that was introduced in Pokemon X and Y. It evolves from Amaura when leveled up at night starting at level 39. Amaura is revived from a Sail Fossil, the counterpart of the Jaw Fossil and Tyrantrum. Due to its fossil nature, Aurorus is based on a sauropod dinosaur and also bears a strong resemblance to the Amargasaurus, which were speculated to have skin sail extensions on their vertebral spines. Aurora also shares similarities with various species of Diplodocoidea.

Appearance
Aurorus is a four-legged dinosaur-type Pokemon that resembles a sauropod and it has a mostly blue body with a lighter blue underside. Its head has a white V-shaped mark on its head with a single light blue crystal in the center. Two large flowing candles extend from the top of his head and run down his neck. The candles are pale whitish yellow at the base and turn a pale violet blue at the edges. Aurorus has bright blue eyes, a long neck, and a long, tapered tail with a teardrop tip. A series of small ice crystals run down either side of its body. There are three claw toes on the hind legs, but one large claw and a single claw on the front legs.
Behavior
Aurorus’ candles can change color depending on its mood, as seen in the Pokemon anime series. It is usually calm and friendly, though it has the ability to create walls of ice or entrap enemies in ice when angry or threatened. The crystals in its body generate icy air up to 150 degrees Celsius. A frozen Aurorus was discovered on a glacier exactly as it looked years ago. When Aurorus howls, several northern lights appear in the sky
Strengths and Weaknesses
Aurorus has relatively high stats with an especially high HP, special attack, and special defence stats. Due to its typing, Aurorus is weak to ground, rock, water and grass-types taking double the normal damage from them. It is also weak to both fighting and steel type moves but takes quadruple the normal damage. However, it is resistant to normal, flying, poison, and ice-types and these traits make Aurorus a threatening wallbreaker. That is only helped with its access to high-powered STAB (same-type attack bonus) moves like Blizzard and Refrigerate-boosted Hyper Voice.
Best moveset
Aurorus is a threatening wallbreaker due to its good offensive typing, its fairly high special attack and access to high-powered STAB (same-type attack bonus) moves. The ability Refrigerate, causes normal-type moves to become ice-type moves and have their power multiplied by 1.2, making Hyper Voice an effective STAB move. If Aurorus instead has the ability Snow Warning, which summons hail on switch-ins, then Blizzard is the better choice. The move Freeze Dry allows Aurorus to better hit ice resistant water-types and also serves as another STAB move. Finally, Hidden Power is another STAB move for type coverage, while Earth Power is another move for type coverage for ice resistant Pokemon.

Trivia
- No other Pokemon has the same exact type combination as Aurorus and its pre-evolved form
- Aurorus has the highest base HP stat of any rock-type Pokemon
- Aurorus shares several aspects with Tyrantrum: both are rock-type Pokemon introduced in Generation VI, both of them evolve from Pokemon with a base stat total of 362 starting with level 39, (although Tyrunt evolves during the day rather than during the night), and both also share a base stat total of 521
- Aurorus and its pre-evolved form were designed by Hitoshi Ariga
- Aurorus is based on a sauropod dinosaur
- Aurorus is also likely inspired by a strong resemblance to the Amargasaurus, which were speculated to have skin sail extensions on their vertebral spines
- Aurorus shares traits with various species of Diplodocoidea
- Aurorus’ sails are also based on auroras, most likely aurora borealis due to Aurorus’ partial ice typing and the fact it only evolves at night
- Aurorus may have also been based upon a queen just like Tyrantrum, with the V-shaped mark and the two flowing sails acting as a tiara or a headdress worn by queens from medieval times while its body with small ice crystals resembles a dress
- Aurorus may be a combination of aurora and Amargasaurus
