About Bellsprout

As a generation one Pokemon, Bellsprout has made a lot of appearances throughout the anime’s history. Its first appearance was as a minor role in the original series in the episode Primeape Goes Bananas. Bellsprout is part of a three stage evolution and will evolve into Weepinbell upon reaching level 21 but to evolve Weepinbell into Victreebell, you will need to use a Leaf Stone. The Pokedex mentions its combat capabilities as it is “blindingly fast” and its acid can melt away even the hardest object.

Appearance

Bellsprout appears to be a living plant whose feet are the roots of the plant with two leaves for arms, and a bell-shaped head. Bellsprout’s head is mostly yellow and its leaves are green with a very thin brown, and stem-like body. Despite its meager appearance, the Pokedex states that Bellsprout can be blindingly fast and the acid it spits from its mouth can melt iron. Bellsprout is a small plant Pokemon at only 2 feet and 4 inches, or 0.7 meters, tall.

Bellsprout Appearance

Behavior

Bellsprout uses its roots to hydrate and it prefers humid climates with them typically found in jungle areas or luscious forests. In the generation two games, Bellsprouts are coveted and Sprout Tower exists to revere this odd “Plant Pokemon”. Throughout Bellsprout’s history in the anime, it is shown to be a capable fighter and the Pokedex mentions its predatory capabilities and lightning fast speed.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Even though the anime and the Pokedex make Bellsprout out to be a particularly powerful offensive Pokemon, it is fairly mediocre at best. For a base evolution it does have respectable physical and special attack stats, but it is nowhere near “blindingly fast”. Furthermore, as a dual type poison and grass Pokemon, Bellsprout is weak to flying, fire, psychic, and ice type moves. It is, however, resistant to fighting, water, grass, electric, and fairy type moves but not immune to any type in the games.

Best Moveset

As a base evolution, Bellsprout’s involvement with competitive battling is exclusively limited to LC (Little Cup) brackets. Surprisingly, it is capable of One Hit KO’ing opponent’s Pokemon thanks to its high base attack stats. With a Life Orb, as a held item, it can become even more consistent, so consider running Swords Dance, Seed Bomb, Sucker Punch, and Sleep Powder for the best chance of success. Swords Dance will help Bellsprout sweep through the enemy team, Seed Bomb benefits from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus), Sucker Punch gives you some outplay potential and Sleep Powder can disable your opponent’s Pokemon.

How to Catch Bellsprout in Pokemon Go

If you would like to obtain a Bellsprout in Pokemon Go, it is fairly easy to do so. As a base evolution from the original games, it is a common encounter in the wild. Any grassy or commercial area will boost the spawns of Bellsprout if you are looking for Bellsprout specifically. You will need 25 Bellsprout candies in order to evolve it into Weepinbell, and another 100 to evolve it into Victreebell. It does not seem as if Bellsprout has appeared in raid battles in the past, but you should be able to find one easily in the wild.

FAQ

How do I evolve Bellsprout?

Bellsprout will evolve into Weepinbell upon reaching level 21 and thus you just need to hit the level threshold and allow the evolution animation to play without hitting the “B” button. In order to evolve your Weepinbell, you will need to use a Leaf Stone.

Is Bellsprout a good Pokemon?

Bellsprout has a surprisingly good physical and special attack stat, especially for a base evolution Pokemon. In casual play, there is no reason to consider keeping Bellsprout over its evolutions but that changes in competitive battling. As in the LC (Little Cup) brackets of competitive play, it can deal a considerable amount of damage.

What are Bellsprout attacks?

A Bellsprout will almost always know Vine Whip and Growth as it learns these moves at level 1. It is also capable of learning Wrap, Poison Powder, Sleep Powder, and Stun Spore naturally through leveling. In order to learn Acid, Razor Leaf, and Slam, you will need to cancel your Bellsprout’s evolution until it reaches 26, 33, and 42 respectively.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Flower Pokemon”. Bellsprout is one of the original 151 Pokemon making it fairly unique in the franchise. Its offensive capabilities in battle are rather shocking for such a modest looking Pokemon and on top of this, Bellsprout and its evolution line only become stronger with more investment. Reserve a slot on your team for Bellsprout for a strong grass and poison type Pokemon.
