Appearance

Buizel is a weasel or otter-like Pokemon that has an orange coloured body with a cream colored belly, mouth and cream tipped tails. It is a bipedal Pokemon that stands on two legs with two blue fins on its arms while its tail is split into two ends that help it swim. There are black spots on Buizel’s face that resemble whiskers. It is a fairly short Pokemon at only 2 feet and 4 inches, or 0.7 meters, tall.

Buizel Appearance

Behavior

Buizel had its fair share of opportunities to appear in the anime and was originally caught by Dawn in the Diamond and Pearl season. But she traded it with Ash, for Aipom, as it seemed more interested in Pokemon battles. Buizel is an adept swimmer/diver as it can propel itself through the water and utilize a floatation sac to rise in the water. Throughout its appearances as Ash’s Pokemon, it had trouble getting along with the rest of the party and was often seen getting into conflict with the rest of Ash’s team. However, it was determined to prove itself through battle.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Even for a base evolution Pokemon, there is not much that is particularly powerful about Buizel. Its best stat is its speed stat but Buizel has a hard time utilizing this speed. As a monotype water Pokemon, it is naturally safe against many different types of moves. It is, however, weak to grass and electric type moves but resistant against steel, fire, water, and ice type moves while taking regular damage from every other type in the game.

Best Moveset

As a base evolution Pokemon, Buizel’s involvement with competitive battling is exclusively limited to LC (Little Cup) brackets. With the Swift Swim ability, it can often outspeed almost any other Pokemon in the format and thus consider using a Life Orb, as a held item, to complement Buizel’s speed. For a decent moveset, run Aqua Tail, Return, Hidden Power Fire, and Aqua Jet. Aqua Tail and Aqua Jet both benefit from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) and Aqua Jet gives you priority. Return is useful if the opponent’s are resistant to water type moves while Hidden Power Fire is for type coverage.

How to Catch Buizel in Pokemon Go

If you would like to obtain a Buizel in Pokemon Go, there are a few ways to do so. As a water type Pokemon, you can find them more often in watery areas like lakes, rivers, harbors, or in the rain. While you cannot hatch Buizel from eggs, it has appeared as a tier one raid boss in the past. These raids are fairly easy to do yourself so keep your eyes peeled on nearby Pokemon Gyms as you will need 50 Buizel candies in order to evolve your Buizel into a Floatzel.

Trivia

  1. Despite Buizel’s 50/50 ratio of male and female variants, every Buizel that has appeared in the anime has been male.
  2. The name Buizel is a combination of the words buoy and weasel.
  3. The inspiration for Buizel’s design simply comes from weasels or river otters.

FAQ

How does Buizel evolve?

There is nothing special you need to do in order to evolve your Buizel. It will evolve into Floatzel upon reaching level 26 and once Buizel reaches this level threshold, just allow the evolution animation to play without pressing the “B” button. There are no special conditions to evolve Buizel.

What does Floatzel evolve into?

Floatzel is the final evolution and does not evolve into any other Pokemon. Buizel and Floatzel make up a two stage evolution and there is no Pokemon after Floatzel and no Pokemon before Buizel. Once your Buizel has evolved into Floatzel, there is no other Pokemon in the evolution line to collect.

Is Buizel a good Pokemon?

Buizel is a fast Pokemon and becomes even faster with the Swift Swim ability. While it does require some set up, Buizel in LC (Little Cup) brackets will often attack first in a battle. However, Buizel only truly becomes a threat once it evolves into Floatzel. The boost it receives to its physical attack in conjunction with its even faster speed stat makes Floatzel a better choice to consider for battle.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Sea Weasel Pokemon”. While Buizel may be limited to a unique form of competitive play, it is quite unique as a speedy Pokemon. Not many base evolution Pokemon can reach the peaks of 170 base speed and as Buizel evolves into Floatzel, it becomes even stronger with more investment. Reserve a slot on your team for a Buizel if you want a fast moving water type Pokemon.
