Most of the time, grass-type starters are the least popular of the bunch however not in Generation 2. Chikorita is probably the most popular starter in the Johto region, and one of the more popular starters overall, not just the most popular grass type starter.

Appearance of Chikorita

Chikorita as well as its evolutions are a combination of long-necked dinosaurs and fruit plants. For Chikorita in particular, it's rather similar to a pear with its rounded oblong shape and large leaf on top of its head.

Behavior of Chikorita

Chikorita is a rather docile Pokemon, mostly lazing around and soaking up sun rays. Through its devotion to its trainer will at times overcome that relaxation. Ash’s Chikorita in particular was incredibly loyal and devoted to him to a fault, at times not wanting to be swapped out during battle.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Chikorita is a pure grass type so its strengths and weaknesses are easy to remember. It’s strong against the ground, water, grass, and electric-type moves. It takes double damage from flying, poison, bug, fire, and ice-type moves.

Chikorita Evolutions

Chikorita Evolutions are by far what makes Chikorita so popular, especially Bayleef. Bayleef is a well-loved member of the Chikorita Evolutions and not just because there is a rather charismatic internet entertainer by the same name. But not just that, the Chikorita Evolutions are very powerful, especially Meganium.

Trivia

Chikorita has been trained by five trainers in the anime, four of which were given their Chikorita as their starter.

Chikorita and its evolutions don’t have their names changed from Japanese to English and thus also don’t have their voices changed in English anime.

When it was first released, Chikorita’s body was yellow like its evolutions.

FAQs

Q. Is Chikorita a girl?

Chikorita has no specific gender, like all-gendered Pokemon. It can be either male or female, however, its gender ratio is 87.5% male and 12.5% female.

Conclusion

Chikorita may not be the strongest but its evolutions are and it's definitely one of the more loved starters. Having a Chikorita on your team throughout your adventure will certainly serve you well and you’ll find it's just as devoted to you as Ash’s was to him.
