Appearance

Chinchou is a small, blue and yellow Pokemon that resembles a fish. It has anglers like an anglerfish with yellow eyes that somewhat resemble a button with a cross in the middle. Its antennae curve up from the back of its body where its tail would normally be.

Behavior

Chinchou lure their prey by using the glows of their antennae and these are also used to flash communication to other Pokemon living deep in the sea. They have positive and negative electricity, so it can defend itself and stun prey, whichever is necessary. Chinchou typically lives in the deepest depths of the oceans.

Strengths and Weaknesses

As a Water and Electric type Pokémon, Chinchou is weak against Ground and Grass type moves, and takes twice the normal damage from them. It is not immune to any type Pokemon but is resistant to Flying Ice and Fire types, which will do half the damage. It is also resistant to Steel, which only does a quarter the normal damage. There is no advantage or disadvantage with Normal, Fighting, Psychic, Electric, Poison, Dragon, Rock, Dark, Bug, Fairy and Ghost.

Best Moveset

Chinchou has a lot of strong moves including Zap Cannon, which is a move that has 120 power and 50% accuracy. Here are Chinchou’s best moves; Zap Cannon has 50% accuracy but has a 100% chance to paralyze the target. Double Edge has 33% recoil, Thunder has 70% accuracy but a 30% chance to paralyze the target and it cannot miss in rain. Blizzard has 70% accuracy and a 10% chance to freeze the target, and it cannot miss in hail.

How to catch Chinchou in Pokemon Go?

Chinchou can be found in canals, rivers, oceans, beaches, ports, harbors, commercial shopping districts and universities. It is also found during rain, which boosts the appearance of Electric and Water types. Chinchou was just featured prominently in the Festival of Lights event, which promoted Electric types. It was also the subject of a Spotlight Hour during that event, making it easily found for many people. It evolves to Lanturn with 50 candies.

Trivia

  1. In the anime, Chinchou has been shown to walk on land but it has never done so in the games. It also lacks a footprint.
  2. The vowel sounds in Chinchou's English name are the reverse of the vowels in its Japanese name.
  3. Chinchou is a play on chochin, which means lantern.
  4. Chinchou is based on an anglerfish.

FAQs

How big is Chinchou?

Chinchou is pretty small as it stands just one foot and eight inches and weighs just 26.5 pounds. Lanturn is 3’11 tall and weighs 49.6 pounds, which is still not very big overall.

Is Chinchou in Pokemon Sword and Shield?

Yes. You can find and catch Chinchou in East Lake Axewell with a 70% chance to appear during Thunderstorm weather. It may need to be fished up, so players should try fishing in this area when a fishing spot forms.

Is there a shiny Chinchou?

Yes. Shiny Chinchou features a green secondary color instead of yellow. Its button-like eyes and anglers are green instead of the typically yellow.

Conclusion

Chinchou is a great Pokemon to have. The combination of Electric and Water type makes it a really good counter to a lot of Pokemon. It has several type advantages and a pretty good base stat total for an unevolved Pokemon. It has access to several great moves, too, including Zap Cannon, which is a very strong move to have available.
