Introduced in generation six, with the Pokemon X and Y games, Clawitzer is a monotype water Pokemon. It is the final stage evolution of its two stage evolution line and evolves from Clauncher once it reaches the level threshold. Clawitzer is classified by the Pokedex as the “Howitzer Pokemon” which is likely a reference to its general design. This guide will showcase Clawitzer’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Clawitzer.

About Clawitzer

Appearance

Clawitzer is a small blue Pokemon that resembles a shrimp with a large claw. Most of its body is dark blue or light blue, but there is yellow at the tips of Clawitzer’s claws and they have yellow antennae. It also has black stripes running along its body and claws. While Clawitzer resembles a shrimp, its claws are closer to crab claws. Its largest claw is capable of hurling cannonballs at its opponents. Clawitzer is an average sized Pokemon at 4 feet and 3 inches, or 1.3 meters, tall.

Behavior

In the wild, Clawitzer's massive claw has been known to vacuum water and launch compressed cannonballs. These cannonballs can pierce a tanker’s hull and the water that comes out of the nozzle can travel at speeds up to 60 knots. The antennae on Clawitzer's claws can detect the location of its prey. It is highly sought after due to the juicy meat that can come from its claw. The Pokedex mentions that Clawitzer has enough power to punch a hole through iron.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Clawitzer has a powerful special attack stat, and its defensive stats are decent as well. However, its other stats are below average in all aspects, making it difficult for Clawitzer to function as an offensive Pokemon. While it is bulky enough to survive most hits, it is not strong enough to beat a scaling offensive Pokemon. As a monotype water Pokemon, Clawitzer takes 2x damage from grass and electric type moves. It has no immunities but it is resistant to steel, fire, water, and ice type moves.

Best Moveset

In competitive play, Clawitzer is not highly ranked in competitive tiers. While it has the makings of an offensive Pokemon, its specialty lies in breaking through bulky Pokemon rather than being strong enough to beat all kinds of Pokemon. Using its Mega Launcher ability in conjunction with a Life Orb can ensure that its hits deal large amounts of damage. Consider running Scald, Ice Beam, Dark Pulse, and Aura Sphere. This set is aimed at giving the most type coverage and having moves with high base power. Simply select the option that deals the most damage to have Clawitzer get through your opponent’s Pokemon.

How to Catch Clawitzer in Pokemon Go?

If you would like to obtain a Clawitzer in Pokemon Go, the easiest way to do so would be to first obtain a Clauncher and eventually evolve it into Clawitzer. Like most final evolutions, the base evolution spawns more commonly in the wild and it makes it easier to encounter. You can find Clauncer spawning in the wild, at a boosted rate, near canals, oceans, docks, harbors, rivers, lakes, and other watery areas. Only Clawitzer has appeared as a tier one raid boss at Pokemon Gyms in the past and to evolve Clauncher into a Clawitzer it will take 50 candies.

Trivia

  1. The inspiration for Clawitzer’s design is based on the pistol shrimp. A shrimp with a large sized claw.
  2. The name Clawitzer is a combination of claw and howitzer.

FAQ

Is Clawitzer any good?

Clawitzer can function as an aggressive Pokemon. Its capabilities as an offensive Pokemon become weaker if it is up against a faster Pokemon. A large number of Pokemon can beat 59 base speed so it can be difficult using Clawitzer against quick Pokemon. You will want to keep an eye on Clawitzer’s bad matchups if you want it to be good.

Is Clawizer rare?

While Clawitzer itself may be rare to find in the wild, remember that its base evolution gives you more opportunities to eventually obtain a Clawitzer. Due to Clawitzer being available in many different locations and its base evolution featured in the same games, Clawitzer is not particularly rare.

Is Clawitzer a lobster?

It is more accurate to say that Clawitzer is a shrimp, specifically the pistol shrimp. This shrimp also has a large “claw”. While its claw may bear a resemblance to a lobster or crab claw, this design is meant to resemble a real life animal. Although, the Pokedex does mention how tasty the meat from Clawiter’s large claw is.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Howitzer Pokemon”. While Clawitzer’s impact on competitive play is limited, it can deal large amounts of damage when its attacks connect. As an offensive Pokemon, it may fall short of the mark, but the damage it deals is important and can add up quickly. Reserve a slot on your team for Clawitzer if you want a hard hitting water type Pokemon.
