Introduced in generation eight, with the Pokemon Sword and Shield, Coalossal is a dual type rock and fire Pokemon. It is the final evolution of Rolycoly, and evolves from Carkol once it reaches the level threshold. Coalossal is classified by the Pokedex as the “Coal Pokemon'' which is a nod to its general design. This guide will showcase Coalossal’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Coalossal.

Appearance
Coalossal is a massive Pokemon that resembles a monolith of coal or granite. Most of its body is gray or black and there is a large pile of coal on Coalossal’s head while its body is rocky and there are large spikes on each of its shoulders. The coal on its body helps lend to Coalossal’s fire type and its mouth seems to glow with embers when it becomes enraged. Coalossal is one of the tallest Pokemon in the game at 9 feet and 2 inches, or 2.8 meters, tall.
Behavior
Coalossal spends most of its time within mountainous areas, calmly generating heat for those around it. However, it can go into a rampage if miners get too ambitious and has the capability to burn invaders to a crisp by raising temperatures up to over 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit. In the episode where Coalossal was featured, it reached a gigantamax form where it could burn anything nearby just from existing.
Strengths and Weaknesses
A regular Coalossal found in the wild will not pose too much of an offensive threat. Its physical and special attacks are below par and its speed stat makes it one of the slowest Pokemon in the franchise. However, with Coalossal’s ability Steam Engine coupled with a Weakness Policy, as a held item, it becomes a very powerful and dangerous Pokemon. As a rock and fire type Pokemon, Coalossal takes 4x damage from ground and water type moves as well as taking 2x damage from fighting and rock type moves. It is immune to nothing, but is resistant to normal, flying, poison, bug, fire, ice, and fairy type moves.
Best Moveset
While Coalossal does not appear to be the most threatening offensive Pokemon, things can change. As with the right set up it can quickly become one of the most inflated stat pools in the entire franchise. A Weakness Policy, as a held item, along with Steam Engine can make Coalossal 6x faster, deal 2x more damage, and coupled with its naturally good bulk, it can become one of the most menacing Pokemon in the game. Consider running Heat Wave, Meteor Beam, Solar Beam/Earth Power, and Protect. Heat Wave and Meteor Beam benefit from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) and have a good chance of One Hit KO’ing opponent’s Pokemon, Solar Beam/Earth Power are interchangeable as type coverage options, and finally Protect can buy you some precious time before Coalossal begins its sweep.

How to Catch Coalossal in Pokemon Go
Unfortunately, Coalossal is not available for capture at this moment in Pokemon Go. The developers have added Pokemons from generation six, seven, and even eight, but Coalossal has not yet made it to the official release. But once it is released, you can expect to find its base evolution, Rolycoly fairly commonly near farmlands, quarries, parking lots, other industrial areas, with a higher spawn rate during clear weather. It is also possible that you can obtain a Rolycoly from hatching eggs, but until it is released, we will not know the specific details. Like other three stage evolution Pokemon, it is likely that Rolycoly will require 25 candies to evolve into Carkol, and another 100 to evolve into Coalossal.
Trivia

FAQ
Is Coalossal good Competitively?
You will need to check specific formats to see where Coalossal is legal. Some formats will allow Coalossal in its entirety and some will not allow a Coalossal if it has the ability Steam Engine. Other formats will not allow gigantamax, so you will need to check to see which format Coalossal can battle in. When Coalossal is allowed to be played with all the bells and whistles, it is difficult to find another Pokemon with Coalossal’s potential.
What does Coalossal evolve into?
Coalossal is the final evolution in the three stage evolution line which starts with Rolycol and evolves from Carkol at level 34. You can Gigantamax Coalossal in generation eight, but this is not a new stage of evolution and instead powers up your Coalossal.
What makes Coalossal so good?
Coalossal can come with the ability Steam Engine which can help forgo its slow speed stat. On top of this, it can increase its attack stats to match its naturally high defensive stats. Once Coalossal is fully set up, even a few legendary Pokemon cannot match its incredible stats. With enough time, Coalossal can sweep an enemy team at ease.
Conclusion
Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Coal Pokemon”. While Coalossal has been the subject of heated debate in the competitive Pokemon environment, it is rare to see a Pokemon with such high potential in battle. Until players saw Coalossal’s ability Steam Engine, getting 6x stats in any value so quickly was unheard of. Even though Coalossal is not the most impressive Pokemon in terms of its natural base stats, its potential is unbelievable. Reserve a slot on your team for Coalossal if you want a Pokemon capable of doing it all with enough set up.
