Introduced in generation seven, with the Pokemon Sun and Moon games, Cosmoem is a monotype psychic type Pokemon. It is the second stage evolution of its three stage evolution line and evolves from Cosmog and into Solgaleo or Lunala depending on which game you are playing. . Cosmoem is classified by the Pokedex as the “Protostar Pokemon” which may be a nod to its general design. This guide will showcase Cosmoem’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Cosmoem.

About Cosmoem

As a generation seven Pokemon, Cosmoem first appeared in the Sun and Moon Series of the anime in the episode Faba’s Revenge!. In this episode, Lillie’s Pokemon, affectionately nicknamed Nebby, evolves into a Cosmoem. Cosmoem will evolve from Cosmog once it reaches level 43. It also evolves into Solgaleo or Lunala depending on which game you are playing once it reaches level 53. The Pokedex mentions that Cosmoem is a black hole formed within its hard shell.

Appearance

Cosmoem is a Pokemon that is yellow, blue, and celestial. It is meant to be a black hole made to become a Pokemon. As such it is incredibly heavy as a 2204.4 lbs, or 999.9 kg Pokemon. Most of Cosmoem is yellow around its edges, or blue around its center. There is also a small black sphere that is meant to signify the black hole that Cosmoem represents. Cosmoem is a tiny Pokemon at only 0.04 feet, or 0.1 meters, tall. Throughout the anime, Lillie holds Nebby within her purse, and while it is incredibly heavy, it can float within Lillie’s purse.

Behavior

There is little to interpret from Cosmoem’s behavior as this Pokemon is not known to sleep, eat, or even breathe. It will slowly grow as it absorbs starlight and dust into its body. The shell surrounding Cosmoem is known to be one of the hardest materials in the world. It is also referenced as the “Cocoon of the Stars” given its celestial design. While Cosmoem is one of the shortest Pokemon in the franchise, it is also one of the heaviest. As Cosmoem absorbs starlight and dust, it grows bigger in preparation for evolution.

Strengths and Weaknesses

As the second stage evolution of its three stage evolution line, Cosmoem has yet to reach its full potential. It has an astounding physical and special defense but it lacks the high health pool to be a functional defensive Pokemon. Unfortunately, its offensive stats and speed are weak even for a second stage evolution Pokemon. As a monotype psychic Pokemon, Cosmoem takes 2x damage from ghost, bug, and dark type moves. It is immune to no types but will resist fighting and psychic type moves.

Best Moveset

In competitive play, there is little reason to consider using Cosmoem instead of its two final evolution forms. Both Solgaleo and Lunala have functioned as more powerful Pokemon in different roles. While Cosmoem’s base stats are relatively impressive, it is too weak to consider using for competitive play. Instead, you should focus on using Lunala or Solgaleo.

In Lunala’s case you will want to utilize it for its scaling potential as well as its higher than average base stats. Consider using Calm Mind, Moongeist Beam, Psyshock, and Focus Blast/Moonblast. This set is aimed to scale Lunala’s already higher than average stats to much higher peaks. Use the rest of its moveset to ensure you have an option against other types of your opponent’s Pokemon.

How to Catch Cosmoem in Pokemon Go?

Unfortunately, Cosmoem has not been released in Pokemon Go. In fact, the only Pokemon from Generation seven to debut in Pokemon Go are Meltan and Melmetal. Cosmoem will most definitely come to Pokemon along with the other Alolan Pokemon. The developers also have to finish releasing generation six Pokemon, so it could take a while before we see Cosmoem in the game. Until then, we will not know if it hatches from eggs or if it will be available as a raid boss.

Trivia

  1. Cosmoem and its pre-evolution are the only Pokemon that cannot deal damage to an opponent other than Struggle.
  2. The inspiration for Cosmoem’s design is based on a stylized sun and a stylized moon.
  3. The name Cosmeom is a combination of the words cosmo and embryo.

FAQ

How does Cosmoem evolve?

Cosmoem will evolve from Cosmog once it reaches level 43. It will then evolve into either Solgaleo or Lunala depending on which generation seven game you are playing. If you are playing Pokemon Sun, Cosmoem will evolve into Solgaleo once it reaches level 53, and if you are playing Pokemon Moon, Cosmoem will evolve into Lunala once it reaches level 53.

Why does Cosmoem weigh so much?

Cosmoem is meant to resemble a black hole made into a Pokemon. A black hole is one of the densest objects in our known universe. While it may be small, it holds many secrets that our present civilization does not comprehend. It is also meant to be a combination of our moon and sun which could be contributing towards its large weight.

Is Cosmoem a legendary Pokemon?

Cosmoem is a legendary Pokemon. To be considered a legendary Pokemon, the Pokemon must fulfill a few of the three conditions. It cannot be bred at a Pokemon Daycare, cannot evolve, and can only be encountered once per save file. While Cosmoem can evolve, it is still considered a legendary Pokemon.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Protostar Pokemon”. While Cosmoem may not have had the largest impact on competitive play, it can still prove to be a formidable Pokemon. Its high physical and special defense make it a defensive threat, but unfortunately it cannot learn a move that can deal damage to an opponent. You should consider training Cosmoem for its evolutions, Solgaleo and Lunala. Reserve a slot on your team for Cosmoem if you want to eventually have a powerful psychic type Pokemon.
