Introduced in generation two, with the Pokemon Gold and Silver games, Croconaw is a monotype water Pokemon. It is the second stage evolution of its three stage evolution line and evolves from Totodile and into Feraligatr once it reaches the level thresholds. Croconaw is classified by the Pokedex as the “Big Jaw Pokemon” which is a likely reference to its general design. This guide will showcase Croconaw’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Croconaw.

About Croconaw

Appearance

Croconaw is a small blue and yellow Pokemon that seems to be a bipedal crocodile. Most of its body is blue but there are yellow accents around its stomach and its jaw. There is also a cluster of three red spikes on top of Croconaw’s head with a small red tip on the tip of Croconaw’s tail. Its eyes are yellow with black pupils. Croconaw’s hands end in five fingers, and its two feet end in three segments. Croconaw is an average sized Pokemon at 3 feet and 7 inches, or 1.1 meters, tall.

Behavior

Although the Pokedex specifically states that there are 48 fangs lining Croconaw’s mouth, it is typically only depicted as having six. Regardless, its bite is mentioned to be able to lock down prey with a massive bite force. Its fangs are barbed in a way that makes it impossible to remove once they have sunk in. The Pokedex mentions that its fangs will always grow back and how difficult it can be to escape a Croconaw’s bite.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Croconaw has yet to reach its final evolution, so it is not particularly powerful yet. It does have a good physical attack and defense, but its other stats are weaker than average. Because Croconaw’s speed stat is lower than average, it can fall behind in battle quickly. As a monotype water Pokemon, Croconaw takes 2x damage from grass and electric type moves. It is immune to no types but resists steel, fire, water, and ice type moves.

Best Moveset

Croconaw can typically be seen in the NFE (Not Fully Evolved) format of competitive play. In this format, it can be utilized as an aggressive scaling Pokemon. With the Sheer Force ability and a Life Orb held item, the attacks from Croconaw will deal significant damage. Consider running Dragon Dance, Waterfall, Crunch, and Ice Punch/Aqua Jet. This set is aimed at scaling Croconaw’s stats with Dragon Dance, and then using its high attack and speed to sweep the opposing team. The set’s moves have secondary effects that try to take advantage of Sheer Force. If you buy enough time for Croconaw to set up, it can easily take care of an opposing team.

How to Catch Croconaw in Pokemon Go?

If you would like to obtain a Croconaw in Pokemon Go, the easiest way to do so would be to first obtain a Totodile and eventually evolve it into Croconaw. Like most final evolution Pokemon, the base evolution spawns more commonly in the wild as compared to its evolved forms. You can find Totodile spawning in the wild at a boosted rate near harbors, rivers, oceans, canals, harbors, lakes, and other watery areas. Totodile can also be hatched from 2 and 5 km eggs, and all three Pokemon in Totodile’s evolution line have been featured as raid bosses. Totodile as a tier one, Croconaw as a tier two and Feraligatr as a tier three. To evolve Totodile into a Croconaw it will take 25 candies. It will take another 100 candies to evolve Croconaw into a Feraligatr.

Trivia

  1. Due to the censor that blocks inappropriate nicknames on the Global Trade System, Croconaw cannot be traded without a different nickname.
  2. The inspiration for Croconaw’s design seems to be based on a prehistoric crocodilian.
  3. The name Croconaw is a combination of the words crocodile and gnaw.
