Three heads are better than one, and Dodrio puts that mantra to the test. It is known as the Triple Bird Pokemon, and is known mostly for its extremely impressive speed on land, even though it lacks wings. It evolves from Doduo at level 31 and was one of the original 151 Pokemon that were introduced in the original Pokemon Red/Blue games. It was featured in the main series anime episode “The Flame Pokémon-athon!”, where it was the rival pokemon to Ash’s borrowed Ponyta, which would evolve into Rapidash mid race.

Pokedex Entry | Omega Ruby:Watch out if Dodrio's three heads are looking in three separate directions. It's a sure sign that it is on its guard. Don't go near this Pokémon if it's being wary-it may decide to peck you. | Alpha Sapphire:Apparently, the heads aren't the only parts of the body that Dodrio has three of. It has three sets of hearts and lungs as well, so it is capable of running long distances without rest. |

Appearance
Dodrio is clearly defined by its three sets of heads, each with matching black head feathers and long, sharp beaks. The necks of the three heads converge on a single body with pink tail feathers and long powerful legs. Male Dodrio have black necks while Females have brown ones.
Behavior
Each of Dodrio’s heads have their own brain and unique personality, and it is not surprising for them to be constantly at odds, especially in times when it is hungry. Only during times of feeding does these three heads manage to set aside their constant squabbling. Notably, Dodrio have trained to be able to keep one head alert at all times, even at times of rest.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Dodrio has an excellent speed stat which means it is almost certainly going to be attacking first in any given encounter. This when also paired with its similarly large attack stat makes it a grave threat to anything it can strike for super effective damage like Bug, Grass, and Fighting types. However, Dodrio is fragile, and its weak defenses means it can’t take too much punishment itself.
Best Moveset
Dodrio is already a potent physical attacker, but even things that resist it will struggle if it manages to pull off a Swords Dance to boost its attack even higher. Equipped with Jump Kick, it can actually combat those Rock and Steel types that would otherwise wall it from victory.

Dodrio was one of the 151 Pokemon originally available in the release of Pokemon Go, and can typically be found in the wild in open grassland areas. Trivia
- Oddly enough, despite not having wings, Dodrio can learn Fly
- In a case of conflicting Pokedex entries, Doduo is stated in some cases to be able to run faster than Dodrio. This isn’t the case going by in game statistics.
- Dodrio’s name is a combination of dodo (the now extinct bird) and trio
FAQs
What is Dodrio weak to?
Dodrio takes super effective damage from Rock and Ice types with its Normal/Flying typing. With its subpar defense, it will rarely survive more than a couple super effective hits.
Can Dodrio learn Fly?
Surprisingly, even without wings it is capable of learning Fly in the games proper. One can only imagine how that looks in practice.
What is Dodrio based on?
Based on its name, one would believe Dodrio to be based on the extinct Dodo bird, and while this is true, it also shares many characteristics with the modern ostrich, namely its impressive land speed and relative inability to fly
Conclusion
Dodrio is an aggressive and effective choice for your team if you’re likely for a fast physical attacker with good sweeping potential. It has just enough flexibility within its potential move pool to be able to get around its mediocre typing and threaten even some of its expected counters in Rock and Steel types. Just don’t expect this tri-headed bird brain to do it quietly!
