Introduced in the original generation one, with the Pokemon Red, Blue, and Green games, Doduo is a dual type normal and flying Pokemon. It is the first stage evolution of its two stage evolution line and evolves into Dodrio when it reaches the level threshold. Doduo is classified by the Pokedex as the “Twin Bird Pokemon” which is likely a reference to its general design. This guide will showcase Doduo’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Doduo.

About Doduo

As one of the original 151 Pokemon, Doduo first appeared in the Original Series of the anime in the episode Bad to the Bone. In this episode, a trainer named Otoshi showed a woeful lack of control of his Doduo. The Pokedex mentions that both of Doduo’s heads have identical brains. One of the heads will always remain vigilant for any signs of danger.

Appearance

Doduo is a large brown bird-like Pokemon that resembles an ostrich with two heads. Most of its body is brown, but it’s necks are black and its legs are cream-colored. Both heads have identical features with long pierced beaks for pecking at food or opponents. Its long legs end in four talons each. While it lacks any visible wings, its legs are powerful enough to reach over 60 miles per hour. Doduo has two black eyes with white pupils on each head. Doduo is an average sized Pokemon at 4 feet and 7 inches, or 1.4 meters, tall.

Behavior

While the Pokedex mentions that the brains in Doduo’s two heads are identical, they can often be found at odds with the other head. In the anime, Doduo’s first appearance showed it pecking at its other head in frustration. Even though Doduo cannot fly, it has powerful legs and its stride leaves large footprints into the ground. Doduo can commonly be found in plains, grassy areas, and open savannahs. The Pokedex mentions that Doduo can have trouble finding balance. However, it stabilizes much easier while running.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Since Doduo is not the final evolution, it has yet to reach its full potential. Its strongest stat is its physical attack and it has a good speed to match. Doduo has weak defensive stats and a low health pool making it more geared towards offensive play. It has weaker special stats than physical stats so keep this in mind when facing a Doduo. As a dual type normal and flying Pokemon, Doduo takes 2x damage from rock, electric, and ice type moves. It is immune to ground and ghost type moves and will resist bug and grass type moves.

Best Moveset

Doduo is typically reserved for the LC (Little Cup) bracket of competitive play and in this format, it can function as an aggressive offensive Pokemon. Doduo’s best ability is Early Bird, which gives you some resilience against a specific status effect, and can rarely find value. For a held item, you will want to use a Life Orb to ensure that Doduo’s hits are significant. Consider running Brave Bird, Knock Off, Quick Attack, and Hidden Power Fighting/Return. This set is aimed at dealing the most damage possible with high base attack moves. It also comes with Quick Attack to finish off a Pokemon or get some quick damage in. Hidden Power Fighting and Return are interchangeable depending on what type of Pokemon your team is weaker to.

How to Catch Doduo in Pokemon Go?

If you would like to obtain a Doduo in Pokemon Go, there are many different ways of doing so. As a base evolution Pokemon, Doduo is more common to find than its evolved form. You can find Doduo in the wild at a boosted rate near countrysides, farms, fields, forests, parks, and playgrounds. Doduo can also be hatched from 5 km eggs but while Doduo has not been featured as a raid boss yet, Dodrio has been a tier three raid boss at Pokemon Gyms. To evolve Doduo into Dodrio you will need 50 candies.

Trivia

  1. In the beta of Pokemon Red and Blue, Doduo was originally called “Dodo”.
  2. The inspiration for Doduo’s design is likely based on ostriches.
  3. The name Doduo is a combination of the word dodo and duo.

FAQ

At what level does Doduo evolve?

Doduo will evolve into Dodrio once it reaches level 31 as there are no other special conditions to fulfill for this evolution and Doduo will begin to evolve once it reaches the level threshold. Once your Doduo has evolved into Dodrio you have finished the Pokemon’s evolution line and can move on to collecting other Pokemon.

What does Dodrio evolve into?

Dodrio is the final evolution in its two stage evolution line and thus evolves from Doduo but does not evolve further. There are no evolution conditions to fulfill for Dodrio as it simply does not evolve into another Pokemon.

Is Doduo an Ostrich?

It is likely that Doduo was meant to resemble ostriches. There are references to its resemblance to a dodo, but it more closely resembles an ostrich or emu. Its long legs, pointed beak, and lack of flight gives it the impression of the tall birds.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Twin Bird Pokemon”. While Doduo is not as powerful as Dodrio, it can still be considered in competitive play as an offensive Pokemon. Doduo functions best as an aggressive Pokemon. With the right kind of build, Doduo can sweep opposing teams. Reserve a slot on your team for Doduo if you want an aggressive normal and flying type Pokemon.
