Introduced in the generation three, with Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire games, Exploud is a monotype normal Pokemon. It is the third stage evolution of its three stage evolution line and evolves from Loudred which evolves from Whismur when they reach the level thresholds. Exploud is classified by the Pokedex as the “Loud Noise Pokemon” which is likely a reference to its general design. This guide will showcase Exploud’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Exploud.

About Exploud

As a generation three Pokemon, Exploud first appeared in the Ruby and Sapphire season of the anime in the episode Exploud and Clear. In this episode, Guy’s Loudred evolves into an Exploud. The Pokedex mentions that Exploud will communicate with its own kind through whistles, it will only become loud in battle.

Appearance

Exploud is a large humanoid purple and yellow Pokemon. Most of its body is purple, but the tops of its horns, tail, and some small half-circles on its stomach are yellow. It has four teeth that are visible when its mouth is open, its horns are actually tubes that can enhance Exploud’s volume. Exploud has two burly arms and two legs that end in three claws each. Exploud is a tall Pokemon at 4 feet and 11 inches, or 1.5 meters, tall.

Behavior

In battle, Exploud can use the tubes on its body to increase its noise-based attacks. The noise is capable of causing earthquakes. The Pokedex also mentions that its voice can be heard from over six miles away. While Exploud will typically only raise its voice for battle, they will use their loud voice when communicating across long distances. Exploud can make different noises by shifting the organs in its body around. They can commonly be found living in caves.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Exploud is a below average Pokemon in many regards. It has a strong health pool and decent attacking stats, but the rest of its stats hold it back from performing well in battle. Its speed stat is slow, its defensive stats are weak, and its attack stats are split, making it difficult for Exploud to reach high peaks in battle. As a monotype normal Pokemon, Exploud takes 2x damage from fighting type moves. It is immune to ghost type moves, but it does not resist any type in the game.

Best Moveset

In competitive play, Exploud can be difficult to use. Its statline makes it unwieldy to use in battle, but it can be geared for offensive play. With Choice Specs, as a held item, and the Scrappy ability, Exploud can have some modest offensive potential. Consider running Boomburst, Fire Blast, Focus Blast, and Surf. Its attacking moves will deal decent damage through virtue of its high base stats. However, its slow speed encourages the use of Choice Specs to ensure that Exploud has the time to deal damage. This set is aimed at utilizing Exploud’s special attack stat, but you can use a physical attacking move as well if you are afraid of poor matchups.

How to Catch Exploud in Pokemon Go?

If you would like to obtain an Exploud in Pokemon Go, the easiest way to do so would be to first obtain a Whismur and then eventually evolve it into an Exploud. Like most evolved forms of Pokemon, its base evolution is much easier to obtain than its evolved forms. You can find Whismur spawning in the wild, at a boosted rate, near fields, roads, schools, libraries, and commercial areas. Whismur can also be hatched from 2 and 7 km eggs. Unfortunately, Exploud, Loudred, and Whismur have not been featured as raid bosses at Pokemon Gyms. To evolve Whismur into Loudred it will take 12 candies, and another 50 candies to evolve Loudred into Exploud.

Trivia

  1. Exploud has the biggest movepool of sound-based moves out of all the Pokemon in the franchise.
  2. The inspiration for Exploud seems to be based on a living pipe organ.
  3. The name Exploud is a combination of the words explode and loud.

FAQ

What element is Exploud?

Exploud is simply a normal type Pokemon. It is a monotype Pokemon and does not have a secondary type. There have been hints and rumors about a new type of Pokemon being introduced in new generations of Pokemon. With the existence of sound-based moves, the community suspects to see sound-based moves in the franchise eventually.

What is Exploud’s Evolution?

Exploud is the final evolution in its three stage evolution line. It is the final evolution of Whismur and evolves from Loudred. Both of these evolutions only require hitting level thresholds, there are no other special conditions to fulfill with this evolution line. Whismur will evolve at level 20, and Loudred will evolve at level 40.

How do you get Exploud?

In almost every iteration of the Pokemon games, you will need to obtain either Loudred or Whismur and eventually evolve it to its final form. While Whismur will typically spawn naturally in the wild, Loudred is more of a rare encounter throughout the series. They will both typically spawn in 1-2 locations with anywhere from 20% to 50% encounter rates.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Loud Noise Pokemon”. While Exploud is not as powerful in competitive play, it is by no means a weak Pokemon. Other offensive Pokemon may have higher potentials, but Exploud can offer a solid base statline without sacrificing either physical or special attack. While it can be a slow Pokemon, there are items that can help Exploud function in battle better. Reserve a slot on your team for Exploud if you want an aggressive normal type Pokemon.
