Last Modified Jul 13, 2021 05:26 GMT

Introduced in generation two with the Pokemon Gold and Silver games, Feraligatr is a monotype water Pokemon. It is the final evolution of Totodile, the generation two water starter representative. Feraligatr has been around since 2000 and thus has made a number of appearances in Pokemon media ever since. In terms of competitive battling, Feraligatr has managed to retain some relevance over the years. This guide will showcase Feraligatr’s appearances in the anime, its capabilities in battle, as well as other general facts about Feraligatr.

Feraligatr

About Feraligatr

Feraligatr is the final evolution of Totodile, the generation two water starter. In order to get to the final evolution, you will need to evolve your Totodile, at level 18, into Croconaw. Then your Croconaw can evolve into a Feraligatr at level 30. It made its first appearance in the original series during the episode Ring Masters. Feraligatr’s appearances in the anime are more frequent compared to other generation two Pokemon but it’s been mostly minor appearances. The Pokedex states that Feraligatr is a fearsome predator which is to be expected given that it is based on real-life alligators.

Appearance

Feraligatr resembles a bipedal crocodile with large red fins poking out of its head, back, and tail. It is the epithet “big jaw” Pokemon and the phrase fits perfectly when you consider the real-life counterpart it has been designed after. Most of Feraligatr’s body is blue but it does have a cream colored bottom jaw and some cream colored accents around its waist. Feraligatr’s arms end in four pointed claws and its feet are lined with three pointed claws as well. It is rather tall at 7 feet and 7 inches, or 2.3 meters.

Feraligatr Appearance

Behavior

Most of Feraligatr’s appearances in the anime are rather minor so there is not much from the anime to ground its behavior. Feraligatr is shown to be loyal and often takes after its trainer. The Pokedex makes it sound like the apex predator that its design is based around. It mentions Feraligatr’s powerful jaws, swift swimming capabilities, and predatory prowess and that the intimidating Pokemon is rarely found near the water’s edge.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Feraligatr’s biggest selling point is its access to the ability Sheer Force. This gives Feraligatr some relevance alongside its decent attack stat. Its speed and general bulkiness, however, are not all that impressive but with STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) and Sheer Force, Feraligatr’s attacks will hit hard. As a monotype water Pokemon, it is only weak to electric and grass type moves and resists steel, fire, water, and ice type moves.

Mega Feraligatr

Unfortunately for fans of the generation two starter, Mega Feraligatr does not exist in any of the mainline games. While Mega Feraligatr would be the boost that Feraligatr needs to push itself into the top tiers of competitive battling but it will likely remain stoutly in the middle of competitive tiers. Mega Feraligatr is not likely to be introduced any time soon, especially as the developers of the game are moving away from mega evolutions entirely.

Shiny Feraligatr

Shiny Feraligatr’s color swap is not the most striking, but it leaves it in line with its typing and expected move pool. The colors in Shiny Feraligatr do not change too much as the fins on its back go from red to blue, the color on its body turns from blue to teal, and the cream palette found around its body turns yellow. While Shiny Feraligatr may not be the most distinctive shiny, at least it is distinguishable from its regular counterpart. Like all shiny Pokemon, Shiny Feraligatr gains a starry animation upon entering battle.

Best Moveset

Surprisingly for the generation two starter, Feraligatr has managed to stay relevant in competitive Pokemon battling even nearly twenty years later. Its access to the ability Sheer Force coupled with a Life Orb, as it’s held item, can give Feraligatr a strong chance to One Hit KO an opposing Pokemon. For a good moveset consider running Dragon Dance, Liquidation, Ice Punch, and Crunch. Dragon Dance is one of the most powerful set up tools in the game, Liquidation serves as Feraligatr’s primary source of damage benefiting from STAB and Sheer Force while Ice Punch and Crunch serve as type coverage.

How to Catch Feraligatr in Pokemon Go

If you would like to obtain a Feraligatr in Pokemon Go, the easiest way would be to capture all Totodiles you see as with enough candy, you can eventually evolve it into Feraligatr. It will take 25 Totodile candies to evolve into Croconaw, and another 100 to evolve it into Feraligatr. Of course if you would like to skip the grind, Feraligatr has appeared as a tier four raid boss in the past. Keep your eyes peeled for water Pokemon spawning nearby for a chance at Totodile, or look for raids spawning in nearby Pokemon Gyms for a Feraligatr.

Trivia

  3. The name Feraligatr was shortened due to the 10 character limit, its name likely comes from the words feral and alligator.

FAQ

Is Feraligatr a good Pokemon?

For a generation two Pokemon to remain relevant in competitive battling almost 20 years later is very impressive. In casual play, there is nothing wrong with Feraligatr and it will be a solid choice to play through the games with. While Feraligatr is not the most powerful Pokemon, it has proven to be a consistently good pick over the years.

Who is better: Blastoise or Feraligatr?

In terms of competitive battle, Feraligatr appears to be a stronger pick than Blastoise. Especially in regards to their tier, Blastoise is not particularly strong in many of the generations. Even Mega Blastoise seems to be outmatched by a variety of other options. Plus Feraligatr’s access to the ability Sheer Force gives it some precedence over Blastoise.

Can Feraligatr learn Hydro Pump?

In generation two, Feraligatr will learn Hydro Pump naturally by reaching level 58. In fact, in every generation, Feraligatr will naturally learn Hydro Pump without the use of a move tutor or anything unique. The level threshold at which Feraligatr learns Hydro Pump is different for every generation, but as long as you keep leveling your Feraligatr, it will eventually learn Hydro Pump.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this big jaw Pokemon. Feraligatr has maintained a relevant status even twenty years later in competitive battle environments, which is surprising given that not many other Pokemon can say the same. While its on screen roles have been rather limited, Feraligatr has managed to cement itself as a memorable Pokemon even after all this time.
