About Ferrothorn

As a generation five Pokemon, Ferrothorn first appeared in the Black and White season of the anime with the episode Iris and the Rogue Dragonite!. It was used by Officer Jenny in the episode as her crime-fighting partner. Ferrothorn is the final evolution in its line and does not evolve further but it does evolve from Ferroseed once it reaches level 40. The Pokedex mentions that Ferrothron spends a lot of its time adhered to cave ceilings with its three pads.

Ferrothorn Appearance

Ferrothorn is a spiked disc-shaped Pokemon that is mostly gray with three appendages sticking out of it that turn into pads for it to attach to the ground or ceiling. There are two yellow slitted eyes on its body but it has no visible mouth or ears. As a grass and steel type Pokemon, it is meant to seem like a spiked steel ball with the three pads attached to its body via vines. Ferrothorn is an average-sized Pokemon at 3 feet and 3 inches, or 1 meter, tall.

Ferrothorn Behavior

Most of Ferrothorn’s appearances in the anime are minor roles that showcase it in battle. Not much is known about Ferrothron’s behavior through the anime itself. Most of the Pokedex descriptions also just state that Ferrothorn spends its time swinging from a ceiling with its three spiky feelers. It doesn’t seem to have too much in the way of unique behavior and tends to be used as a background Pokemon rather than play a significant role in the universe.

Ferrothorn Strengths and Weaknesses

Ferrothorn has a strong lineup of defensive stats as its special and physical defense are relatively high while its health pool is high enough to function as a defensive Pokemon. Unfortunately, it is incredibly slow but that doesn’t stop it from being a defensive Pokemon as it does not need to move first. As a dual grass and steel type, Ferrothorn is 2x weak to fighting type moves and takes 4x damage from fire type moves. It is immune to poison and resistant against normal, rock, steel, water, grass, electric, psychic, dragon, and fairy-type moves.

Ferrothorn Best Moveset

Ferrothorn is one of the strongest defensive Pokemon in competitive play as its defensive typing combined with its powerful base defensive stats makes it a strong defensive Pokemon. Throughout many generations, Ferrothorn has been near the top of competitive brackets due to its powerful defensive capabilities. Consider running Spikes/Stealth Rock, Leech Seed, Gyro Ball/Power Whip, Power Whip/Protect/Thunder Wave. Spikes and Stealth Rock both function as a hazard for the enemy team, Leech Seed can provide another hazard that can keep Ferrothorn healthy while Gyro Ball and Power Whip are interchangeable as Ferrothorn’s STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) move. Finally, Protect/Thunder Wave can be used depending on preference.

How to Catch Ferrothorn in Pokemon Go

If you want to obtain a Ferrothorn in Pokemon Go, your best option is to first find a Ferroseed that will eventually be evolved into a Ferrothorn. Like most final evolutions, the base evolution is a more common spawn to encounter in the wild and thus, you can find a Ferroseed in parks, forests, woodland, golf courses, and other grassy areas. It can also hatch from 10 km eggs so you can double your chances while you are looking throughout the wild. If you want to evolve your Ferroseed you will need 50 candies to get it to become a Ferrothorn. Unfortunately, Ferrothorn has not appeared as a raid boss in the past, but you can find Ferroseed as a tier one raid boss.

Trivia

  1. Ferrothorn is the only Pokemon in the entire franchise to have a base stat total of 489.
  2. The inspiration for Ferrothorn’s design is likely based on the durian plant.
  3. The name Ferrothorn is a combination of the words ferrous and thorn.
