Fossil Pokemon: Pokemon Sword and Shield

Last Modified Sep 16, 2021 12:40 GMT

Fossil Pokémon have been a part of the Pokémon games ever since the first generation. At first, they were rare Pokémon, but over time, fossil Pokémon have become easier to obtain in the games. Some fossil Pokémon are known for being quite strong, while others are known for being quite weak. Aerodactyl even has a powerful Mega Evolution!

Previous fossil Pokémon (in their fully evolved forms, in order of introduction) include Omastar, Kabutops, Aerodactyl, Cradily, Armaldo, Rampardos, Bastiodon, Carracosta, Archeops, Tyrantrum, and Aurorus. Pokémon Sword and Shield added a total of four new fossil Pokémon to the mix: Dracozolt, Arctozolt, Dracovish, and Arctovish. Most fossil Pokémon are at least part Rock-type; the fossil Pokémon of Pokémon Sword and Shield are the only current exceptions.

What is fossil Pokémon in Pokémon Sword and Shield?

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, collecting fossil Pokémon requires a more unusual method than in previous games. First, you need to acquire fossils, which are most readily available at Bridge Field in the wild area, but can be acquired in several ways.

There are four types of fossil in Pokémon Sword and Shield:

  1. Fossilized Bird
  2. Fossilized Dino
  3. Fossilized Drake
  4. Fossilized Fish

To resurrect these fossils, you’ll need to take two different fossils to the Pokémon Researcher on Route 6. There, she’ll use a special machine to combine the two fossils into one of the following Pokémon: Arctozolt, Dracozolt, Arctovish, or Dracovish.

Where to find fossils in Pokémon Sword and Shield?

There are a few ways to find fossils in Pokémon Sword and Shield. The easiest way is to chat with an NPC inside the Pokémon Center of Stow-on-Side.

  1. In Pokémon Sword, you’ll receive 2 Fossilized Bird
  2. In Pokémon Shield, you’ll receive 2 Fossilized Drake

In order to get the other fossils, you’ll have to visit the Digging Duo Brothers at Bridge Field in the Wild Area near the Pokémon Nursery. You’ll have to pay them 500 Watts for each dig, and the yields are randomized. You’re more likely to receive fossils from the Skill Brother than the Stamina Brother.

  1. In Pokémon Sword, you’ll most often receive Fossilzed Dino and Fossilized Bird fossils.
  2. In Pokémon Shield, you’ll most often receive Fossilized Fish and Fossilized Drake fossils.

What are the fossil combinations in Pokémon Sword and Shield?

Thanks to the Pokémon Researcher’s strange machine, and the questionable power of science, these new fossil Pokémon aren’t true resurrections of the ancient remains: they’re the result of splicing the remains of two different creatures together, and most of them look pretty unhappy about it. Each of the four Pokémon has different type combinations, and for the first time, none of these fossil Pokémon are Rock-type.

Pokémon Sword and Shield fossil combinations:

  1. Fossilized Bird + Fossilized Dino = Arctozolt
  2. Arctozolt is Electric/Ice-type
  3. Fossilized Bird + Fossilized Drake = Dracozolt
  4. Dracozolt is Electric/Dragon
  5. Fossilized Fish + Fossilized Dino = Arctovish
  6. Arctovish is Water/Ice
  7. Fossilized Fish + Fossilized Drake = Dracovish
  8. Dracovish is Water/Dragon
