While the Generation 6 starters aren’t the most popular, the water type Froakie and its evolutions are definitely the ones that are most well known. With Greninja appearing in Super Smash Brothers, the entire evolution line has moved beyond the lack of popularity of Generation 6.

Appearance of Froakie
Froakie is clearly a frog and doesn’t stray from that design very much. Though it does have a little collar of bubbles which are based on frog foam nests.
Behavior of Froakie
Froakie is described as ‘happy-go-lucky’ which is very accurate to its personality. Froakie doesn’t take everything seriously and tries to find joy in as much as he can. However, it does reveal some traits that it will grow into once it evolves at times as it can be cautious and intensely observant of its surroundings.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Froakie is a pure water type so its resistances and weaknesses are relatively straightforward. It is strong against and takes half damage from steel, fire, water, and ice type moves. It is weak to grass and electric type moves and takes double damage from them.
Froakie Evolutions
The Froakie Evolutions are Frogadier and Greninja. While Froagdier is definitely the most forgotten of all of the Froakie Evolutions, Greninja is incredibly well known. Not just for being the final Pokemon in the line of Froakie Evolutions, but for its appearance in Super Smash Brothers and is a rather popular fighter.
Shiny Froakie
Shiny Froakie is the rare, recolored version of Froakie. Though Shiny Froakie may be hard to spot as it's very very similar to a normal Froakie. Shiny Froakie has little differences aside from it being a slightly lighter blue than normal Froakie. This form of Shiny Froakie is strange as Shiny Greninja is very different from its normal form.
Best Moveset for Froakie
All-out Offense: Froakie has one of the higher special attack stats of unevolved Pokemon. This makes it ideal as a sweeper in categories that use only unevolved Pokemon, combining a Life Orb with some powerful water moves like Hydro Pump can turn this little frog into a little nightmare.
Hydro Pump | U-turn |
Ice Beam | Hidden Power Fire/Hidden Power Ground |
How to Catch Froakie in Pokemon Go
In Pokemon Go, Froakie can appear in places where most other water types appear, near beaches, lakes, and rivers. While it can be a little rare due to being a starter, hanging around these areas will grant you a few Froakie appearances pretty quickly.

Trivia
The name Froakie comes from a combination of the words frog, froth, croak, and rookie.
Along with the two main legendaries, as well as the other two starters, Froakie was revealed before X and Y’s release during a Nintendo Direct in 2013.
