Galarian Weezing in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet VGC was a pick recently brought into the spotlight during the Baltimore Regional Championships. An interesting choice in its debut generation due to its Neutralizing Gas ability, Galarian Weezing always had trouble finding true viability in the VGC, with this surge in popularity potentially being no different.

Why use Galarian Weezing in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet VGC?
Galarian Weezing's biggest draw is its Neutralizing Gas ability which nullifies the abilities of all Pokemon on the field. This can be helpful for disabling impactful abilities on opponents like Intimidate, Levitate, or Prankster. Galarian Weezing is also the only legal Poison and Fairy-type in the game, which has great offensive coverage in the current meta.

Galarian Weezing is currently only used when paired with Toedscruel. Neutralizing Gas nullifies Mycelium Might, which then allows Toedscruel to make use of its high speed stat and its access to Spore. Galarian Weezing is also perfect for dealing with Rillaboom, who is one of the few counters to Toedscruel.
Best strategies for Galarian Weezing in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet VGC
With Toedscruel being the only creature in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Regulation H with a self-debuffing ability, it pairs well with Galarian Weezing in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet VGC. Toedscruel is the fastest creature in the entire franchise with access to Spore. Spore is the only legal status move that puts the target to sleep and has a base 100% chance of landing.
To balance this, Game Freak gave Toedscruel Mycelium Might, an ability that makes all of the user's status moves go last in the turn order. With Neutralizing Gas nullifying this ability, Toedscruel is free to act without this restriction. Galarian Weezing also makes for a perfect offensive partner for Toedscruel, as it counters Rillaboom.

Rillaboom is a Grass-type that acts with priority rather than a high speed stat. This renders it immune to most of Toedscruel's tricks. Luckily, Galarian Weezing has access to Poison and Fire-type moves to get Rillaboom off the field as quickly as possible.
Best build for Galarian Weezing in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet VGC
With Galarian Weezing's main purpose being to sit on the field and get rid of Grass-types, its main focus is its Special Attack. Since Galarian Weezing is not used in a Trick Room composition, players can bring one with perfect IVs. Here is a potential build that can help Galarian Weezing serve this role to the best of its ability:
- Nature: Modest (+ Special Attack, - Attack)
- Held item: Choice Specs
- Effort Values: 252 Special Attack, 252 Speed, 4 HP
- Tera Type: Fire
- Moves: Flamethrower, Strange Steam, Sludge Bomb, Dazzling Gleam.
This build offers great damage potential through same-type attack boosted spread damage through Dazzling Gleam, while also being able to deal nuclear Fire damage with Flamethrower and Tera Fire. Having this Fire-type coverage is also important for dealing with Gholdengo, who has seen a surge in popularity since the start of Regulation H.
Counters to Galarian Weezing in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet VGC
Galarian Weezing has value simply by sitting on the field. With it not commonly running the Levitate ability, it is weak to Ground-type damage. The best way to deal with Galarian Weezing is to target it with heavy Ground or Psychic damage from a creature faster than Toedscruel.
