All About Glaceon Pokémon

Last Modified Jun 7, 2021 06:35 GMT

The ice type evolution of the Eevee line, Glaceon, was introduced in generation four. Along with Leafeon, Glaceon had special requirements for evolving beyond just using an elemental stone. You would have to locate an ice rock and level up your Eevee with Pokemon that were near the ice rock. This blue, icey Eevee went against the grain of typical ice types with decent defensive stats but the trademark high offensive stats befitting the ice types. This guide will showcase Glaceon’s appearances in the anime, its capability in Pokemon battles, as well as other general facts about Glaceon.

About Glaceon

Glaceon was introduced alongside Leafeon in generation four with the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl games. As one of Eevee’s many evolutions, you will have to take into consideration not only what Glaceon’s evolving requirements are, but also that you do not accidentally fulfill one of Eevee’s other evolution requirements. However, as long as you level your Eevee next to an ice rock (generation 4-7) you will not have to worry about your Eevee evolving into an Espeon or an Umbreon. Glaceon’s first appearance in the anime was in the episode “A Full Course Tag Battle!” where May explains the evolution of Eevee into Glaceon.

Appearance of Glaceon

As part of the Eevee evolutions, Glaceon is a feline Pokemon with teal fur. According to the Pokedex, this fur can be frozen into sharp quills to defend itself. On its head, it has a relatively darker blue crest that extends into two appendages that dangle around its head. Glaceon has two diamond-shaped ears, four legs, and a short tail. At the end of its four paws, it has an even darker blue color and its eyes are a similar color. Its color signifies its ice typing with cool colors.

Behavior of Glaceon

Befitting the ice typing, Glaceons are regarded to be docile, calm, and collected. It is noted in the Pokemon lore that wild Glaceon are capable hunters. With abilities like snow cloak and ice body, the thought of a Glaceon hunting the wild is inspiring. Glaceon is methodical Pokemon, and they resemble cat-like behavior of allowing their prey to thinking they got away, only to hunt them down again. A brave and confident Pokemon that is not easily swayed or gets nervous easily.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Glaceon’s biggest weakness is simply its typing. Ice types are notorious for being frail and while Glaceon has decent defense stats, it does not have the health pool to survive for very long. It does have a powerful special attack stat, but a weak speed stat to take advantage of it. With low speed and low health, it will be difficult keeping your Glaceon alive for its sweeping potential. Glaceon is regarded as untiered in competitive Pokemon brackets, meaning it is so difficult to make forward progress with Glaceon. It does not even fit into one of Smogon’s lowest tiers.

Shiny Glaceon

Along with Leafeon, Shiny Glaceon is one of the more underwhelming shinies of the Eevee evolutions. Shiny Glaceon’s color does not change much and most of its color palette simply becomes paler. The dark blues of Shiny Glaceon become darker and the lighter blues become lighter. There is not much difference, however, Shiny Glaceon will still have the starry entrance that every shiny Pokemon has.

Best Moveset

As Glaceon is not typically used for competitive play, you should consider what helps you take advantage of most types in casual play. Abuse Glaceon’s high special attack stat and consider ice types' high offensive capabilities. If you are considering using Glaceon in competitive battles, the agreed-upon set is Celebrate, Ice Beam, Hidden Power Fighting, and Shadow Ball. While Celebrate does not do anything on its own, when Glaceon is holding a Normalium Z, the Z move will increase all of Glaceon’s stats by one stage. Giving Glaceon a fighting chance for sweeping potential. Ice Beam is Glaceon’s bread and butter move, with the STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) effect, Hidden Power Fighting allows you to cover more types while still maintaining Glaceon’s strong special attack, and Shadow Ball will help you cover tricky matchups.

How to Catch Glaceon in Pokemon Go

If you want a Glaceon in Pokemon Go, the procedure is somewhat similar to how you evolve an Eevee into a Glaceon in generations 4-7. Trivia

  1. In the Diamond and Pearl Pokedex, Glaceon, Leafeon, and Umbreon have the same footprint.
  2. If you want a Glaceon in Pokemon HeartGold or SoulSilver, you will have to trade from the Diamond and Pearl games as there is no ice rock available in the Johto/Kanto region.
  3. Of all the Eeveelutions, Glaceon has the lowest baseline attack stat.

FAQs

Q. How do you evolve Eevee into Glaceon?

If you want to evolve an Eevee into Glaceon, for generations 4-7, you will have to level up your Eevee near an ice rock. For generation 8, you will just need to use an Ice Stone on the Eevee. There is no level requirement, you can do it as soon as you have located the ice rock in your respective game.

Q. Why is Glaceon bad?

Its stat distribution just does not bode well for it in competitive Pokemon formats. In addition to Ice types being typically weak in competitive battles, Glaceon just is not in a good spot for competitive battling. If Glaceon is your favorite Eeveelution, you should consider using it for casual play rather than competitive.

Q. What should I Name Eevee to get Glaceon in Pokemon Go?

For the name trick to evolve Eevee into Glaceon in Pokemon Go, name your Eevee “Rea” to get it to evolve into Glaceon guaranteed. This is a one-time use, so if you have already done this on your Pokemon Go account, you will have to do it through the glacial lure available in the Pokemon shop.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know what Glaceon’s role in the anime was, its battle capabilities, and how to get one for yourself in Pokemon Go. While Glaceon’s role in competitive battle is lackluster, its addition into generation four is a welcome one. Currently, only about half the types are covered by Eevee, but having the ice representative is a good step in the right direction. While Glaceon may not have the flashiest battle capabilities, it is still regarded as a beloved Pokemon thanks to its involvement in the Eevee lineup. If you are curious about this ice-type Eevee’s potential, give it a shot yourself to see why fans of the series love Glaceon.
