Greedent is a Normal type Pokemon that was introduced along with the Galar Region (Generation VIII). It is the evolved form of Swovet and is based on a squirrel. It is very common throughout Galar but while Greedent has really strong teeth, it lacks in wits.

Appearance

Greedent is based on a squirrel and is primarily brown but it is humongous in size not only in terms of its body, but also its tail. The top part of its face is light brown with eyes and two ears on top of its head. The bottom half of these ears are light brown and top dark brown with yellow patches on both sides.

The bottom half of this Pokemon’s face has thick dark brown fur which extends a bit out of its face. It’s nose is similar to that of a squirrel and its mouth is right below it. It has two giant teeth sticking out of it while its body is large and consists of dark brown fur in the middle and light brown on either side. It also has arms and legs sticking out of the light brown section with a tail on the back that is larger than its entire body. It is seen curled up with the top part light brown and bottom dark brown.

Behavior

If Greedent was to be described in one word, it would be called a stasher. It goes around collecting berries and stashing them in its tail. It could be considered as an act of saving up, but the problem arises when the amount it has stashed up in its tail is way too much for it to carry. It walks around not even realising that it drops all these berries left and right while walking.

Apart from stashing habits, it has an ability which is quite representative of its species and that is its teeth. Greedent can chew through the toughest shells, making it a professional nutcracker if you ever need one. No berry can withstand its rage once it wants to eat it. It can

chew through them with ease.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Greedent is a pure normal type and thus it is weak to Fighting type moves and takes double the normal damage from them. Luckily enough, this is the only type that can deal increased damage to this Pokemon. However, Greedent has no resistances to any type but it is immune to Ghost type moves, and thus they can’t deal any damage.

Best moveset

Greedent does not have much viability due to its low defensive and offensive stats apart from its HP. However, there is always a way to make almost any Pokemon viable if you really want to play it. It is important for your Greedent to have the ability Cheek Pouch and give it a Sitrus Berry, as a held item, if you want this build to work. After using Belly Drum, which maximises its health, but since Greedent is slower than most Pokemon, it will take damage before using this move. Usually this would not be good but Greedent is so tanky in terms of HP, it needs to take a hit in order to use the Sitrus Berry. Along with Cheek Pouch, this Pokemon gets almost its entire HP back. After that, use Earthquake or Psychic Fangs to deal damage.

Psychic Fangs is especially helpful as it helps counter Fighting types, the only weakness of this Pokemon. Last Resort is the STAB move and it can be replaced with Body Slam for a more consistent way of dealing damage with a chance of Paralysis or with Giga Impact for a stronger one hit kill move without prerequisites. I would always recommend Last Resort as you are eventually bound to use all of the other moves unless you encounter a Honchkrow, in which case you have no option but to switch out.

Trivia

  1. Greedent and its family are the only Galarian Pokemon with the ability Cheek Pouch.
  2. Greedent’s Base Attack stat and Base Defense stat are exactly the same.
  3. Upon evolving, Greedent becomes more dumbwitted compared to Swovet.

Conclusion

Greedent, while not the strongest or the smartest, are undeniably cute. Apart from being fluffy and soft overall, this Pokemon is a hoarder who stores any berries it comes across in its tail. Greedent would be the worst roommate considering it would store all of the snacks in the fridge in its tail. Competitively, while not outstanding, you can come up with some really interesting strategies with Greedent because of being able to max out damage without much loss in health in one turn along with access to an incredible movepool with a lot of options. The low stats in general can be a drawback but definitely doesn’t stop this Pokemon from being viable.
