Last Modified Aug 5, 2021 07:00 GMT

A classic Pokemon making their first appearance in the original game, Grimer is a Poison Pokemon that’s a solid choice in terms of both offense and defense. This Pokemon may be made out of sludge and garbage but that doesn't stop them from being a valuable part of your team as someone who can whittle down an opponents’ HP with hard hitting poison moves.

Pokedex EntryGrimer emerged from the sludge that settled on a polluted seabed. This Pokémon loves anything filthy. It constantly leaks a horribly germ- infested fluid from all over its body. Grimer's sludgy and rubbery body can be forced through any opening, however small it may be. This Pokémon enters sewer pipes to drink filthy wastewater.

Grimer Appearance

Grimer at its base is a mostly formless Pokemon and that is because it is quite literally a pile of garbage and sludge. The best way to describe this Pokemon is as a purple blob of gelatinous mass, with the Pokemon literally dripping parts of itself as it moves. Grimer has no legs, only two arms, eyes, and a mouth ready to eat any garbage it sees.

An Alolan Grimer, on the other hand, is not that different because it still is a giant puddle of sludge but the coloration of this version of Grimer has changed. Thanks to its diet, Alolan Grimers have a green body instead of a purple one and have a line of yellow sludge that wraps around its mouth.

Behavior

Grimer’s diet mainly consists of sewage found in the sewage pipes and wastewater. Because of this, Grimer’s body is slick and pliable, which means that these Pokemon can squeeze into tight spaces to reach the sewage they need to feed on. Producing toxins based on what they feed off, Grimers are known to carry around a foul smell.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Grimer is a fairly adept Pokemon to use once you know what you’re doing and have solid footing when it comes to the concept of battles. While their stats are average, Grimer will only get better as you level them up, as they can evolve to a stronger form. As a Poison type, Grimer is resistant against Fairy and Grass types, however, moves from Ground and Psychic types can easily put Grimer out of the battle if you’re not careful.

Best moveset for Grimer

Gunk ShotFire Punch
Giga DrainThief

This moveset emphasizes debuffs on your opponent and survivability for Grimer. Gunk shot has a chance to poison the opponent’s Pokemon while Fire punch can burn and thus being able to use both status effects in one Pokemon is a rare but powerful occurrence. Giga Drain allows you to recover half of the health lost from an opponent's move. Finally, Thief allows you to steal your opponent Pokemon’s held item, so long as Grimer isn’t holding anything themselves. This can throw off your opponent as their Pokemon’s strategy may rely on the item they’re holding.

Alolan Grimer

Alolan Grimer

In the Alola region, Grimer has a different Variation called Alolan Grimer. An Alolan Grimer has a different type of typing than its original predecessor as while Grimer was a Poison type, Alolan Grimer is now a Poison and Dark type Pokemon. This change allows Alolan Grimer to have several new strategies that allow it to change up the game. That makes an Alolan Grimer resistant to Poison, Grass, Ghost and Dark-type moves, weak to only Ground types and also now immune to Psychic type moves.

Best moveset for Alolan Grimer

PursuitKnock Off
Poison JabShadow Sneak

This moveset is a bit of a risk/reward playstyle, as to use it effectively you’ll have to read your opponent and guess what they’ll do next. It’s a different kind of play, but one that’s definitely worth it when you play the right move. Pursuit can do 1.5 times its amount of damage when you use the move as your opponent trainer pulls their Pokemon from play out of battle. Knock off does the same amount of damage if your opponent is holding an item, as well as taking it out of their hands. Poison Jab has a chance to poison the opponent and finally, Shadow Sneak is a good move that usually always lands first, regardless of Speed stat.

Shiny Grimer

Shiny Grimer

With it hard to locate in the wild, finding a Shiny Grimer is tricky as it is a tough Pokemon to track down. The main difference between a normal and Shiny Grimer is obvious, as Shiny Grimer’s body is now a green, much like its Alolan counterpart To get a Shiny Grimer of your own, you’ll have to find one in the wild, hatch one from an egg or you could always find someone willing to trade one. Like all shiny Pokemon, Shiny Grimer gains a starry animation when it enters a battle.

Shiny Alolan Grimer

Shiny Alolan Grimer

Finding a Shiny Alolan Grimer is tricky, but definitely worth it in the long run. The main difference between a normal and Shiny Alolan Grimer is a nice play. That is because a Shiny Grimer and an Aolan Grimer have a similar colour palette, while a Shiny Aolan Grimer and Grimer have a similar colour palette. It basically means that a Shiny Aolan Grimer has a purple body although the yellow sludge around its neck stays as it is. To get a shiny of your own, you’ll have to find one in the wild, hatch one from an egg or, once again, you could always find someone willing to trade one. Like all shiny Pokemon, Shiny Alolan Grimer gains a starry animation when it enters a battle.

How to catch Grimer in Pokemon Go?

Grimer is an easy Pokemon to catch in Pokemon Go as all you need to do is walk for a while, and one should appear relatively close by. Since it’s a comparatively weaker Pokemon, you won’t have to worry about berries or using Great or Ultra balls. A well tossed Pokeball should do the trick in catching Grimer.

Trivia

  1. Grimer’s smell is similar to trash dumps.
  2. Alolan Grimer has the lowest Speed stat of all non-Mega Evolved Dark-types Pokemons,
  3. Alolan Grimer may be based on an oil slick.
