With Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Regulation G bringing restricted monsters back into the game, fans have set their sights on the original kings of the weather wars, Groudon and Kyogre. These two creatures have been rivals since their introduction, with Groudon controlling sunny weather and Kyogre controlling rain.

Given how the state of the meta can change when restricted creatures are reintroduced, some players may not know which among Groudon or Kyogre is stronger for the game's current state. Both creatures have pros and cons, so here is everything to know when using Groudon or Kyogre in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Benefits of using Groudon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet VGC

Groudon is a pure Ground-type that summons sunny weather upon entering battle, thanks to its Drought ability. This makes it a great supporting choice in double battles as it can be paired with another monster with Chlorophyl or Solar Power to boost their stats. With Scarlet-exclusive Paradox Pokemon benefiting from the sun as well, it makes a great ally for these already dominant threats in the metagame.

Thanks to a buff in Pokemon Sword and Shield, Groudon can learn Heat Crash in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, meaning it finally has a viable way to deal Fire-type damage to benefit from the sunny weather. This makes Groudon arguably the best it has been since the removal of its Primal Forme after the seventh generation.

Benefits of using Kyogre in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet VGC

Kyogre is a pure Water-type that sets rain thanks to its Drizzle ability. Rain boosts the damage of Water-type moves while weakening the damage from Fire-type moves; this is the exact opposite of the sun. Since Kyogre's Water-type moves benefit from the rain as well as the same-type attack bonus, it is an offensive powerhouse.

Kyogre also has access to the move Thunder, which usually has bad accuracy but is guaranteed to hit when it rains on the battlefield. This gives Kyogre an offensive choice against Urshifu, a very prominent threat in the competitive metagame for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Why Kyogre is better for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet VGC

Kyogre synergizes with its own weather much better than Groudon does, who can often buff the opposing side's Grass-types with its Drought ability (Image via Game Freak)

Kyogre is considered the better choice between the two at the moment. Thanks to Kyogre working with rain much better than Groudon works with the sun, it is much more self-sufficient. Kyogre also buffs Urshifu, thanks to the rain empowering its Surging Strikes signature move.

Kyogre can also run a variety of sets to maximize its damage or to support its teammates. Some trainers run Choice Specs or Choice Scarf items while using the move Water Spout. This item does more damage if Kyogre has more health, and it also hits both opponents on the field.
