Last Modified Jul 30, 2021 11:33 GMT

Gulpin is a Poison-type Pokémon that was introduced in Generation III. It is known to be a part of the “stomach Pokémon” species because practically all of its body is its stomach. Gulpin has a two step evolution line and evolves into Swalot once it reaches the level threshold.

Most of Gulpin’s body is made up of its stomach—its heart and brain are very small in comparison. This Pokémon’s stomach contains special enzymes that dissolve anything.

Appearance

Gulpin is a round, green, stomach-like Pokémon that has a yellow, feather-like structure on the top of its head (of which the female version has a smaller one). It also has a black diamond on its back, with a short tail and has a puckered mouth alongside stubby appendages that resemble hands as well.

Behavior

Gulpin does not have an esophagus or teeth so when it eats, the food goes directly into their stomachs. It has a very poisonous fluid in its stomach that can dissolve and digest anything imaginable and the unique ability to swallow things that are equal to its size. That is made easier by the fact that most of Gulpin’s body is a stomach with its heart and brain are also extremely small to help that.

Strengths and Weaknesses

As a monotype Poison Pokemon, Gulpin is resistant to Fighting, Bug, Poison, Grass, and Fairy Pokémon, and takes half the damage. It is also strong against Poison, Grass and Psychic type Pokemons. However, it is weak against Ground and Psychic type moves, taking twice as much damage as normal. Gulpin is normally affected by Electric, Dark, Dragon, Fire, Flying, Ghost, Ice, Normal, Rock, Steel, and Water-type Pokémon.

Shiny Gulpin

Shiny Gulpin

The Shiny Gulpin’s main difference from the normal Gulpin, is that its body is blue instead of green as it still has the same yellow feather-like adornment on its head. The Shiny Swalot is the same blue as Gulpin, with yellow whiskers and beady yellow eyes. Nothing else changes in comparison between Shiny Gulpin and Gulpin, and neither does the Shiny Swalot when compared to the original/normal Swalot. Like all shiny Pokemon, Shiny Gulpin gains a starry animation when it enters a battle.

Best moveset (Gulpin)

Gulpin has a lot of strong moves, including one move that has 250 power and 100% accuracy, and another with 200 power and 100% accuracy. Here are Gulpin’s best moves: Solar Beam charges on turn 1 before hitting on turn 2, unless in sunlight then it won’t need to charge up while Double Edge has a 33% recoil. Both Explosion (250 power) and Self Destruct (200) hits all adjacent Pokemon and the user faints when using it but they’re both really useful when battling multiple Pokemon.

How to catch Gulpin in Pokemon Go?

Gulpin is most often found in grassy locations like grasslands, farmlands, parks, forests, meadows, and fields. They’re the most common places to find Gulpin nesting and in addition, Gulpin is more likely to be found during cloudy weather conditions. It has been a Raid boss in the past but things may have changed with the latest updates, so keep an eye out. You’ll also need 50 candies in order to evolve it into a Swalot.

Trivia

  1. Gulpin is the only Pokémon with a base stat of 302.
  2. Gulpin is one of the Pokémon that Ditto can appear as in the wild.
  3. In Super Smash Bros. it is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Pokéballs. When this happens, it uses the move Swallow.
  4. Gulpin appears to be based on a gallbladder, which is a green organ that contains digestive enzymes (similar to Gulpin’s special fluid that will digest anything).

FAQs

Is Gulpin a male or female?

Gulpin, like the vast majority of Pokemon, can be both male and female. Some Pokemon have a higher chance of being male or female, but not Gulpin as you’ll have a 50/50 chance to get either. That is despite the fact that some have said it resembles a male but the chances of getting either one are equal.

Is Gulpin a good Pokemon to have?

Gulpin has really high HP, and it can take quite a few hits for your team. It also has a really strong move set and access to the move Stockpile which can make it stronger. Liquid Ooze is also a great defensive ability that it can have but offensively is where Gulpin lacks although it makes up for that by being a tremendous defensive Pokemon.

What are some moves Gulpin can learn?

Gulpin has the ability to learn lots of moves including: Yawn, Poison Gas, Sludge, Amnesia, Toxic, Stockpile, Swallow, Spit Up and Sludge Bomb.

Where can I find Gulpin?

Gulpin typically lives in grassy areas, so in Pokemon Go, that’s a safe bet to find one. It won’t always be there, but that remains the best place to look. It can also be found in various locations in Pokemon: Sword and Shield.

Conclusion

Gulpin is a strong Pokemon to have for defense. While it doesn’t do a lot offensively, it can withstand a lot of hits and stretch out battles to give your team the advantage. It rarely goes down quickly, which makes it an excellent addition to your team and to the Pokemon world.
