Hakamo-o Pokémon: How to catch, Stats, Moves, Strength, Weakness, Trivia, FAQs

Last Modified Feb 3, 2022 07:38 GMT

Introduced in generation seven, with the Pokemon Sun and Moon games, Hakamo-o is a dual type dragon and fighting Pokemon. It is the second stage evolution of its three stage evolution line and evolves from Jangmo-o and into Kommo-o once it reaches the level thresholds. Hakamo-o is classified by the Pokedex as the “Scaly Pokemon” which is likely a reference to its general design. This guide will showcase Hakamo-o’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Hakamo-o.

About Hakamo-o

As a generation seven Pokemon, Hakamo-o first made an appearance in the Sun and Moon season of the anime in the episode Family Determination!. In this episode, Lillie and Gladion encounter Jangmo-o, Hakamo-o, and Kommo-o while investigating the Altar of the Sunne. As a generation seven Pokemon, it comes from Alola. Hakamo-o is part of a three stage evolution line that starts with Jangmo-o which evolves into Hakamo-o at level 35 and subsequently into Kommo-o at level 45. The Pokedex mentions that Hakamo-o continuously sheds and regrows its scales.

Appearance

Hakamo-o is a medium, gray Pokemon that seems to resemble a reptile. Most of its body is gray, though the scales on its forehead, neck, arms, and tail are a mustard yellow. Hakamo-o has a strong, triangular snout and red eyes. It has a single large scale on its forehead with two smaller, gray scales behind both of its eyes. It walks on two legs and has three yellow talons on each foot. The outside of its arms are covered by three yellow scales, with the scale over its hand having a red center. It has four talons on each hand and appears to have opposable thumbs. Its arms and lower legs are a darker gray. Its long tail ends in a single yellow scale. Hakamo-o is a medium Pokemon at 3 feet and 11 inches, or 1.2 meters, tall.

Behavior

After evolving from Jangmo-o, Hakamo-o leaves its group to strengthen its skills. Hakamo-o is an aggressive Pokemon, clanging its scales together before viciously attacking its foes. Its punches are said to tear its opponents to shreds. During its battles, Hakamo-o often damages and loses its scales, which grow back harder and sharper. Instead of feeling ashamed of its missing scales, it views the scaleless parts of its body as a sign of strength, and it even shows off these weak spots to its defeated opponents.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Hakamo-o’s bulky stats and access to the ability Bulletproof make it a strong defensive Pokemon. Its bulk allows Hakamo-o to tank multiple hits while using setup moves such as Dragon Dance. However, Hakamo-o is greatly threatened by Fairy types, which can put a stop to its setup. As a dual type dragon and fighting Pokemon, Hakamo-o is weak to flying, Psychic, Ice, and Dragon moves, taking twice the normal damage against them. It is also very weak to Fairy type moves and takes quadruple the normal damage. It is, however, resistant to Rock, Bug, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, and Dark type moves, and takes half the normal damage.

Best Moveset

In competitive play, Hakamo-o is typically reserved for the NFE (Not Fully Evolved) format. There is little reason to consider Hakamo-o in other formats and Kommo-o can often function as a more powerful Hakamo-o. Nevertheless, Hakamo-o can function as a defensive Pokemon with access to setup offensive moves. Consider running Dragon Dance, Substitute, Dragon Claw, and Drain Punch. This set is aimed to give Hakamo-o both durability and offensive power while trying to keep Hakamo-o alive as long as possible to see success with it in battle.

How to Catch Hakamo-o in Pokemon Go?

Unfortunately, Hakamo-o, as well as Jangmo-o and Kommo-o, are currently unobtainable in Pokemon Go. The majority of the Pokemon from the Alola region have yet to be added to Pokemon Go, though Kommo-o’s status as Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon will likely ensure that the evolution line is among the first to be introduced. Hakamo-o will almost certainly evolve from Jangmo-o with 25 Jangmo-o candies and will evolve into Kommo-o with 100 Jangmo-o candies.

Trivia

  1. Hakamo-o and its evolution Kommo-o are the only dual type Dragon and Fighting Pokemon.
  2. Haka is a type of war dance found in multiple Polynesian cultures, and mo’o is Hawaiian for lizard.
  3. Hakamo-o’s discard scales are great conductors of heat--they are commonly molded into pots and pans.

FAQ

Is Hakamo-o Rare?

In Sun and Moon, Hakamo-o can only be encountered as an SOS summon during a battle with a wild Jangmo-o, which only has a 5% appearance rate. In Sword and Shield, outside of Max Raid battles, Hakamo-o only has a 2% appearance rate at night at the Lake of Outrage. Hakamo-o is currently unobtainable in Pokemon Go.

Is Hakamo-o a legendary?

No, Hakamo-o is not a legendary Pokemon. Hakamo-o can be repeatedly encountered in the wild, can bred, and can evolve. However, Hakamo-o’s evolution, Kommo-o, is considered a Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon. A Pseudo-Legendary pokemon is part of a three-stage evolution, has a base stat total of 600, and requires exactly 1,250,000 experience to reach level 100. This makes Kommo-o, as well as Hakamo-o, stronger than the average Pokemon.

What does Hakamo-o Mean?

Haka is a type of war dance found across several Polynesian cultures. It often involves vigorous movements, stamping of the feet, and shouting. Mo’o is Hawaiian for lizard or dragon. Literally, Hakamo-o’s name means War-Dance Dragon. In Japanese, Hakamo-o’s name is Jyarango. Jarajara is the Japanese onomatopoeia for jingling, so it is the Jingling Dragon.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Scaly Pokemon”. Since Hakamo-o’s introduction in generation seven, it has managed to represent a bulky defensive threat that only gets stronger the longer a battle goes on. It is a powerful Pokemon that is very resilient to many common strategies of enemy trainers and thus if you reserve a slot on your team for Hakamo-o, you’ll get a solid and consistent Pokemon.
