Introduced in generation four, with the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl games, Happiny is a monotype normal Pokemon. It is the base evolution of its three stage evolution line and evolves into Chansey which evolves into Blissey. This evolution line has some unique requirements throughout each evolution. Happiny is classified by the Pokedex as the “Playhouse Pokemon” which is likely a reference to its general design. This guide will showcase Happiny’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Happiny.
About Happiny
As a generation four Pokemon, Happiny first appeared in the Diamond and Pearl season of the anime in the episode One Big Happiny Family!. In this episode, a Happiny hatches from the egg that Brock was caring for. Happiny is the base evolution of its three stage evolution line and evolves into Chansey once it is leveled while holding an Oval Stone during the day. Chansey evolves into Blissey when it is leveled with high friendship. Appearance
Happiny is a small humanoid pink Pokemon that holds a small egg-shaped rock near its stomach. Most of its body is pink, but it appears to be wearing red pants with a white stripe around its waist. Happiny has a long curly hair strand growing out of its head. It has two black eyes with white pupils and two red dimples on its cheeks. Two short stubby legs can be seen through Happiny’s red shell and it has two digit-less arms. Happiny is a small Pokemon at only 2 feet, or 0.6 meters, tall.
Behavior
The pouch that surrounds Happiny helps it to carry things. They typically cannot produce eggs at this stage so they will replace it with something egg-shaped, usually a stone. Since it is mimicking its evolutions, Happiny tries to take good care of its “egg”. While they can become very attached to the stone, they will sometimes give their stone to someone they trust deeply. The Pokedex mentions that if you take a Happiny’s stone away it will throw a tantrum.
Strengths and Weaknesses
As a base evolution Pokemon, Happiny is a weak Pokemon. Its strongest stat is in its health pool, but it has one of the lowest physical attack and defense stats in the entire franchise. While its special defense is decent for a base evolution Pokemon, it still has a slow speed. Happiny can take a lot of damage from special attackers, but does not do well elsewhere. As a monotype normal Pokemon, Happiny takes 2x damage from fighting type moves. It is immune to ghost type moves, but will take regular damage from every other type in the franchise.
Best Moveset
You can use Happiny in the LC (Little Cup) format of competitive play. In this format, Happiny only has to face other base evolution Pokemon which gives it a chance to succeed in battle. It is typically utilized as a supportive Pokemon. The goal with Happiny is to keep the rest of your team healthy. With an Eviolite, as a held item, and the Natural Cure ability, Happiny can survive a prolonged battle. Consider running Thunder Wave/Toxic, Heal Bell, Light Screen, and Flamethrower. This set is aimed at giving you ways to disable your opponent’s Pokemon, keep your own Pokemon supported, and still have a way to deal damage with Happiny. Try to keep Happiny away from physical attackers and it will take good care of your team.

How to Catch Happiny in Pokemon Go?
If you would like to obtain a Happiny in Pokemon Go, there is only one way of doing so. While Happiny is a base evolution Pokemon, it was introduced after its other two evolutions. This made it difficult to find Happiny as it does not spawn naturally in the wild. You can hatch a Happiny from 2 and 7 km eggs and since Chansey was released before Happiny was, it can also be hatched from 2 and 5 km eggs. Only Chansey has been featured as a tier three raid boss at Pokemon Gyms. To evolve Happiny into a Chansey it will take 25 candies and Happiny has to walk 15 km as your buddy. To evolve Chansey into a Blissey it will take 50 candies.
Trivia
- Happiny is the only Pokemon in the franchise to have two different evolving conditions that do not include hitting a level threshold.
- The inspiration for Happiny’s design seems to be inspired by human infants.
- The name Happiny is a combination of the words happiness and tiny.
FAQ
How does Happiny evolve?
Happiny will evolve into Chansey when it is leveled up during the day while it is holding an Oval Stone. There are no level conditions for this evolution and you can evolve Happiny as soon as you find the held item. Chansey will evolve into Blissey once it is leveled up with a high friendship value. You can raise friendship by using the Pokemon, feeding it, or using them in competitions.
Where can I find Happiny?
In the generation four games, you will obtain an egg from a trainer in Hearthome City. You can also find them spawning naturally in Trophy Garden. With the generation five games, you would just have to hatch the egg from the trainer in the gate at Nacrene City. In the other generations, Happiny spawns in multiple different locations naturally in the wild.
Is Happiny rare in Pokemon Moon?
While Happiny can appear in multiple locations in the Pokemon moon game, it does have a low encounter rate. Typically Happiny has around 5-20% encounter rate depending on which area you are in. Since Happiny does appear in multiple routes, Happiny is not a particularly rare Pokemon.
Conclusion
Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Playhouse Pokemon”. While Happiny does not seem like the most powerful Pokemon, its evolution line has still made a large impact on competitive play. Happiny evolves into one of the strongest defensive Pokemon in the franchise. Even though Happiny is slower than other defensive Pokemon, having a supportive Pokemon can be beneficial. Reserve a slot on your team for Happiny if you want a supportive normal type Pokemon.
