It's no secret in Pokemon GO that Shadow Mewtwo is well sought-after for its fantastic offensive potential. However, players can now catch Shadow Mewtwo in its shiny variant as well. Thanks to the game's recent addition of Shadow Raids and the debut of the Rising Shadows event, lucky participants can battle and defeat Shadow Mewtwo as a raid boss and have a small chance of catching its shiny.

The shiny variant appearance isn't guaranteed, but determined Pokemon GO players can repeatedly clear Mewtwo's Shadow Raid for the rare creature alteration to appear. Fortunately, trainers have until May 28, 2023, at 8 pm local time to capture Shadow Mewtwo's shiny before it is removed from the raid rotation.

Pokemon GO's Rising Shadows event sees the arrival of the new Shadow Raid format, which operates much like standard raids but features Shadow Pokemon and a new "enrage" mechanic that progressively makes the bosses more powerful. Fortunately, trainers have some tools on their side to stem the tide of a strengthening Shadow Raid boss, including Purified Gems.

These new items can be crafted by combining Shadow Shards dropped by Team GO Rocket members and can be used in Shadow Raids to nullify the boosts an enraged raid boss receives.

When it comes to Shadow Mewtwo in particular, Pokemon GO players will want to assemble their best team of counters and stock up on healing items and Purified Gems. Raid passes will also be required, as Shadow Raids cannot be accessed with Remote Raid Passes.

Bringing fellow friends and trainers into the raid is also advised to speed up the process of Shadow Mewtwo's defeat. The strategy is to defeat Shadow Mewtwo as many times as possible to reach the bonus encounter and hopefully trigger the shiny appearance.

Steps to capture Shiny Shadow Mewtwo in Pokemon GO

  1. Begin by stockpiling the necessities. This includes Purified Gems, healing items, and raid passes. You'll also need to take time to power up the Pokemon team you want to send into the raid, which will require candy and Stardust. Ideal Pocket Monsters to counter Shadow Mewtwo include Bug, Dark, and Ghost-type creatures, or at least species capable of using moves of those elemental types.
  2. Get in touch with your acquaintances and in-game friends and find the time to meet up at a gym currently being overtaken by Team GO Rocket and Shadow Mewtwo. Though some players may be able to beat Shadow Mewtwo solo, it's best to have a backup so you can defeat this boss repeatedly and quickly.
  3. Use a raid pass and enter the Shadow Raid, and battle Shadow Mewtwo. When it begins to enrage, don't be shy about using your Purified Gems to negate the stat boosts it receives. Remember that Purified Gems can also stack their effects if multiple players use them at once during a Shadow Raid.
  4. Eventually, with the right counters on your side, this Pokemon GO raid boss will fall, and you'll be sent to the bonus encounter to possibly catch Shadow Mewtwo. There is a slim chance that the shiny will appear instead of the normal variation, but if it doesn't, you'll need to attempt the raid again until you trigger a shiny appearance.

That's all there is to it! Unfortunately, shiny Shadow Mewtwo is a tough variant to find, even among shinies. Pokemon GO enthusiasts will need to continue grinding out 5-star Shadow Raids throughout the Rising Shadows event, and hopefully, they'll get lucky.

Otherwise, players may have to trade with others for a shiny Shadow Mewtwo, which will likely come at a steep price.
