Clamperl in Pokemon GO was introduced during its own limited research event in February 2019, and its evolutions Huntail and Gorebyss arrived at the same time. However, some trainers may not be familiar with how to get this sleepy Water-type, or might be wondering if it can appear as a shiny. Fortunately, there are many ways to obtain Clamperl in GO, and it certainly can appear in its shiny form.
Regardless of how you're adventuring through Pokemon GO, there are more than a few opportunities to find Clamperl, and anywhere it can be found, its shiny variant can be found as well. Still, it doesn't hurt to examine the ways that you can find and catch Clamperl in Niantic's mobile title.
How to get Clamperl in Pokemon GO

Clamperl has appeared in many parts of Pokemon GO's gameplay in the past and present, including the methods below:
- Wild Encounters
- 5km and 7km Egg Hatches
- Tier-1 Raid Battles
- Research Task Encounters
Wild Encounters
After its exclusive event in February 2019, Clamperl was made available as a wild Pokemon spawn. It tends to appear regularly near bodies of water, particularly on beaches, but it can be found as a randomized wild spawn elsewhere as well.
However, based on the current season or event, Clamperl may not appear all that often in the wild. It's advised to frequent areas near an ocean if possible while also using standard incense or lure modules if at all possible to coax this Pokemon out of hiding.
You can find Clamperl in the Pokemon GO Aquatic Paradise event, as well as at GO Fest 2024 in New York City.
Hatching 5km and 7km Eggs
Although it hasn't appeared as an egg hatch in quite some time, Clamperl was previously obtainable via hatching 7km eggs during 2022's Water Festival and 2020's Throwback Challenge events. While you can't currently hatch Clamperl during the Season of Shared Skies, there may come a time when Clamperl is reintroduced to the egg pool, so it doesn't hurt to keep your eyes peeled.
Tier-1 Raid Battles
In the past, Clamperl has occasionally popped up as a tier-1 raid boss in Pokemon GO, making it easy to defeat with Electric and Grass-type Pokemon without too much difficulty. Clamperl isn't currently a tier-1 raid boss, but it may reappear in the future during events, especially those centered on Water-type Pokemon.
Research Task Encounters
Clamperl has appeared as a reward for both field and limited research tasks in Pokemon GO's past, and it can currently be obtained during the Shared Skies season by completing the research tasks "Make 3 Great Throws" and "Catch 15 species of Pokemon". If you're having a tough time finding Clamperl in the wild, this may be your best bet at catching it until Niantic changes the research tasks.
How to get shiny Clamperl in Pokemon GO
When it comes to finding shiny Clamperl in Pokemon GO, you might have your work cut out for you. Clamperl has a shiny rate of approximately 1/58 to 1/64 depending on external factors, which does make its shiny rate higher than most, but the trouble is finding enough Clamperl in the wild or elsewhere to trigger the shiny appearance.
As of the Season of Shared Skies, it's recommended to roam the wild near beaches or bodies of water as much as possible while also using incense and lure modules regularly. Spin Pokestops often and complete any "Make 3 Great Throws" or "Catch 15 species of Pokemon" tasks you find, and future events may help boost Clamperl's appearance rates in the future.
It will take time, patience, and diligence, but with enough willpower, you can find a shiny Clamperl of your own by combining as many of the methods outlined above as possible.
