"It's getting hard to get excited": Pokemon GO player comments about wild encounters and the "different, superior, and special kinds"

Wild Pokemon are the most common type of creatures encountered by players in Pokemon GO. They appear randomly on the game's main map view, ensuring every trainer sees them during their adventures. However, some players have reported burnout due to the overabundance of these Pocket Monsters, which they feel lack real value.

Redditor Foulmoth232 addressed this sentiment in the Pokemon GO subreddit. Unlike the main series, Niantic's mobile title offers a variety of creature variants in the same location, including Mega Evolutions, Dynamax forms, Gigantamax forms, Shadow Pokemon, and the Mighty Pokemon. This makes the standard wild spawns seem underwhelming in comparison.

The original poster's stance is understandable. Raids and other special encounter methods are generally more rewarding for trainers because they offer creatures with better chances of high stats. Additionally, many of these methods have increased chances of yielding Shiny Pokemon.

Many Redditors agree that most wild encounters are only valuable for their candy and Stardust rewards, as the creatures are rarely shiny and often have low IVs. Pokemon GO's Battle League may also contribute to wild encounters feeling underwhelming, as the game's real-time battling system is different from the turn-based combat of the main series.

This change has also resulted in a total removal of utility moves and abilities, altering how a creature's viability is determined and resulting in fewer valuable Pocket Monsters for battle.

A great way to increase interest in wild spawns would be to introduce more special cups into Pokemon GO. Special cups are battle formats with stricter rules than standard leagues, often creating unique metagames.

One popular special cup is the Little Cup, which only allows unevolved Pokemon under 500 combat power to participate.

Another popular format is the Catch Cup, which only allows wild Pokemon caught while the format is live to participate. This significantly boosts interest in wild spawns.

How could Niantic fix wild spawns in Pokemon GO?

Niantic has introduced various methods to catch above-average Pokemon, making it natural for players to feel that wild spawns are rarely worth the effort.

There is no easy way for the developer to increase the value of wild spawns in the game. However, a focus on events that emphasize wild encounters rather than raids would be a great place to start.
