Klang

Last Modified Apr 5, 2022 09:43 GMT

Introduced in generation five, with Pokemon Black and White games, Klang is a monotype steel Pokemon. It is the second stage evolution of its three stage evolution line and evolves from Klink, and evolves into Klinklang when they reach the level thresholds. Klang is classified by the Pokedex as the “Gear Pokemon” which is likely a reference to its general design. This guide will showcase Klang’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Klang.

About Klang

While Klang is a generation five Pokemon, Klang first appeared in the Pokemon Movie, White - Victini and Zekrom and Black - Victini and Reshiram. In this movie, a Klang appears alongside Klink and Klinklang under the ownership of Mannes. The Pokedex mentions that Klang’s gears can charge with energy and then release into a powerful attack.

Appearance

Klang is a small mechanical Pokemon that resembles a group of gears. Most of its body is varying shades of gray and one of the smaller gears on Klang’s body has a face. It has one eye, an open mouth, a large blue nose and a bandaged eye. Other than this face, Klang has no discernable features. Klang is constantly in motion and its gears fall into each other to make its whole frame spin. Klang is a small Pokemon at only 2 feet, or 0.6 meters, tall.

Behavior

Some of the spinoff games of the Pokemon franchise have shown Klang’s gears are independent of one another. However, this phenomenon is not referenced since its appearance in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. The red core at the center of Klang’s body can store tremendous energy. This energy can be used to launch gears and powerful blasts of electricity from its spikes. The Pokedex mentions that its red core will charge the minigear to make it ready to fire.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Klang has a powerful line up of base stats as it has a strong physical attack and defense matched with a decent special defense and speed. Unfortunately, it does have a weak health pool, so Klang cannot last long in battle. However, its Clear Body ability can make it difficult to slow down Klang’s stat changes. As a monotype steel Pokemon, Klang takes 2x damage from fighting, ground, and fire type moves. It is immune to poison type moves and resistant to normal, flying, rock, bug, steel, grass, psychic, ice, dragon, and fairy type moves.

Best Moveset

In competitive play, Klang can be considered as a scaling offensive Pokemon. Klang has the easiest time in the NFE (Not Fully Evolved) format. You should consider Klinklang for other formats as its base statline is powerful, it just needs time to set up and sweep the opposing team. With the Clear Body ability preventing negative stat changes, Klang can often find the time to scale into a powerful Pokemon. Consider running Shift Gear, Gear Grind, Rest, and Sleep Talk. This set attempts to scale Klang’s stats with Shift Gear. It then uses Gear Grind and to knock out its opponents. You can use Rest once Klang has taken damage, and use Sleep Talk to keep Klang relevant while it is asleep.

How to Catch Klang in Pokemon Go

If you would like to obtain a Klang in Pokemon Go, the easiest way to do so would be to first obtain a Klink and eventually evolve it into a Klang. Like most evolved forms of Pokemon, its base evolution spawns more commonly in the wild. You can find Klink spawning in the wild at a boosted rate near modern buildings, railroads, and other commercial areas. Klink can also be hatched from 10 km eggs. While Klang and Klinklang have not appeared as raid bosses, Klink has been featured as a tier one raid boss at Pokemon Gyms. To evolve Klink into a Klang will take 25 candies. It will require another 100 candies to evolve Klang into a Klang.

Trivia

  1. Klang was the last non-Legendary or Mythic Pokemon that made its debut in the anime series.
  2. The inspiration for Klang’s design is based on interlocking gear systems.
  3. The name Klang comes from the onomatopoeia for heavy metal striking a surface.
