Introduced in generation six, with the Pokemon X and Y games, Klefki is a dual-type steel and fairy Pokemon. It is a standalone Pokemon which means that it does not evolve from or into any other Pokemon. Klefki is classified by the Pokedex as the “Key Ring Pokemon” which may be a nod to its general design. This guide will showcase Klefki’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Klefki.

Appearance
Klefki is an odd Pokemon that resembles a keyring with various keys found along its ring, and its face almost resembles a lock. On top of Klefki’s head is a small stem that also resembles the teeth of a key while below Klefki’s head is a small teardrop-shaped body and the keyring goes around its head and body. The keys that are found on Klefki’s ring can vary from old ancient keys or ornate keys, to common keys like a car key. Klefki is an incredibly small Pokemon at only 8 inches, or 0.2 meters, tall.
Behavior
While Klefki’s origins are never explicitly stated, it is often used for the purpose of a keyring in the Pokemon universe. As a living being, it becomes attached to certain keys and will take care of the keys or hesitate to give them up. No one really knows why it collects keys, but it has been known to sneak into people’s homes to steal keys. Since they do not like giving up their keys, people will give the Klefki important keys to prevent others from stealing them.
Strengths and Weaknesses
For a standalone Pokemon, Klefki is relatively weak. While its defensive stats are respectable, its health stat makes it difficult to capitalize on its defensive capabilities. Its physical and special attack are not the worst, but it falls a little short compared to other offensive Pokemon. However, as a dual type fairy and steel Pokemon, Klefki is 2x weak to ground and fire type moves. It is immune to poison and dragon type moves, and resistant against normal, flying, rock, bug, grass, psychic, ice, dark, and fairy type moves.
Best Moveset
Klefki’s best role in competitive battle is as a supportive role. Its defensive typing makes it fairly resilient and can forego its low health stat, while its ability, Prankster, can help it set up hazards or status effects faster. Plus it can also learn moves that can slow down fast offensive Pokemon. Consider running Spikes, Thunder Wave, Dazzling Gleam/Flash Cannon/Toxic, and Toxic/Magnet Rise/Heal Block. The damage from Spikes can add up quickly, Thunder Wave can inflict paralysis giving you time while Dazzling Gleam/Flash Cannon/Toxic are all interchangeable as Klefki’s sources of damage. Finally, Toxic/Magnet Rise/Heal Block can help cover your team’s weaknesses.

How to Catch Klefki in Pokemon Go
If you would like to obtain a Klefki in Pokemon Go, you will have to find one in the wild as it cannot be hatched from any egg and it has not appeared as a raid boss in the past. The only way to encounter a Klefki is to find one in the wild and it spawns at a boosted rate near large buildings, railway stations and tracks, and near local landmarks. While Klefki is fairly rare, you should be able to find one as long as you look near its spawn locations frequently. Since It is a standalone Pokemon, you can use any candies you obtain to power up your Klefki instead of saving them for evolution.
Trivia
- The inspiration for Klefki’s design is based on a keychain.
- The name Klefki is a combination of the words clef (French for key) and key.

FAQs
Is Klefki rare in Pokemon?
Klefki has a rarer spawn rate than other Pokemon that spawn in the area, but it is not exactly an exclusive Pokemon. Typically, it has a 10% chance of spawning which makes it fairly common to encounter if you are looking specifically for Klefki. Since most rare Pokemon have less than a 5% chance of spawning, finding Klefki should not take too much time.
Is Klefki a good Pokemon?
Klefki’s biggest strengths are its strong defensive typing, its ability Prankster, and its wide range of moves. It is not particularly effective as a dedicated offensive or defensive Pokemon and thus you will want to use Klefki as a supportive Pokemon instead. However, it is one of the stronger supportive options to consider as it resists a majority of types and can support many different strategies.
Where can I find Klefki?
In generation six, you can find Klefki on Routes 15 and 16, Lost Hotel, and in steel type Friend Safaris. With generation seven, you can find Klefki at Thrifty Megamart (Abandoned Site) and the Poke Pelago. Klefki is not naturally available in generation eight, but you can trade your Klefki up into generation eight. If you have the expansion pass, you can find Klefki at the Fields of Honor.
Conclusion
Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Key Ring Pokemon”. Klefki has managed to stay relevant throughout its release as one of the stronger support Pokemon in competitive play. While it is not top tier, it has managed to remain in the middle of the pack since its debut thanks to its strong defensive typing alongside its wide range of moves that allows it to function on many different teams. Reserve a slot for Klefki if you want a defensive support Pokemon on your team.
