Appearance
Komala is a small, gray green Pokemon that seems to resemble a koala. Most of its body is light gray with peach tufts in its ear. It has a large black nose and white eyebrows and cheeks. Komala is always holding a brown spotted log, which is a similar size to Komala itself. In an unused walking animation found in Sun and Moon, Komala moves by hugging its log and wiggling from side to side. Komala’s hands have five black fingers, and its feet have three toes and black paw pads. Komala is a small Pokemon at only 1 foot and 4 inches, or 0.4 meters, tall.
Behavior
From the moment it is born, Komala is perpetually sleeping. This is due to the sedative properties of the leaves that make up its diet. Though it can appear to be aware of its surroundings, its movements are only the results of it tossing and turning in its dreams. Komala receives its log from its parents when it is born, though it will also cling to the arm of a friendly trainer.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Komala is the only Pokemon with the Comatose ability and it is always considered Asleep during battle, though it can still attack normally. This makes Komala immune to visible status changes, such as Burn and Paralysis, but not to invisible statuses like Confusion or Attraction. This makes Komala an excellent Pokemon for dealing with Toxic Spikes, as well as absorbing moves like Will-o-Wisp and Thunderwave. Unfortunately, Komala’s low bulk and speed can lead to it being easily knocked out by offensive threats. As a monotype normal Pokemon, Komala is only weak to fighting type moves, taking twice the normal damage against them. It does not resist any move types, though it is completely immune to ghost type moves.
Best Moveset
Komala’s Comatose ability, as well as access to Rapid Spin, make it an excellent utility Pokemon. Komala is unaffected by Toxic Spikes, and it can clear them away for its teammates. Komala also has access to some powerful physical moves once the field hazards have been taken care of. Consider running Rapid Spin, Return, U-Turn, and Earthquake. This set is aimed to give Herdier a utility role on your team while also having strong attacks once the entry hazards have been cleared.

How to Catch Komala in Pokemon Go?
Unfortunately, Komala is currently unobtainable in Pokemon Go. The majority of the Pokemon from the Alola region have yet to be added to Pokemon Go, though it will certainly join the roster eventually. As a normal type Pokemon, it will likely be found near towns and cities, especially during partly cloudy weather. Until it is released we will not know for sure if Komala can be hatched from eggs or if it can be found in raid battles at Pokemon Gyms.
Trivia
- Komala shares its epithet, the “Drowsing Pokemon”, with Musharna.
- Shiny Komala is identical to regular Komala, except its brown log changes from brown and cream to white and pink. This has lead to speculation that the log Komala holds is the “real Pokemon”, though there is little in-game evidence for this fan theory.
- Komala’s name is likely a combination of coma and koala. In the wild, Koala’s sleep for up to 18 hours a day. While Komala sleeps because the leaves it eats have a sedative effect, Koala’s sleep because Eucalyptus leaves, their primary diet, have little nutritional value.
