Appearance of Larvitar
Larvitar is a small, green reptile-like Pokemon. Its skin is rocky and it has a red, scaly stomach in the shape of a rhombus. It has a spike on top of its head. Larvitar has small holes in its body. Its feet have a single toenail on each one. It has a short tail.
Behavior of Larvitar
Larvitar is born deep underground and far away from its parent. In the anime, Ash’s Larvitar was hatched from an egg that Ash was supposed to deliver to its mother. Larvitar lives in mountains and hills and consumes dirt to grow. Once it has eaten a “mountains worth”, it will reach its pupal stage. Larvitar is often eating, trying to get to this stage.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Larvitar is weak to Fighting, Ground, Steel, Ice, Water, and Grass-type Pokemon. Water and Grass deal four times the amount of damage to Larvitar and the others deal twice as much. Larvitar is immune to Electric-type Pokemon. It is resistant to Flying, Normal, Rock, Poison, and Fire types. Poison and Fire-type Pokemon deal a quarter the damage to Larvitar and the others do half. Larvitar is also strong attacking Steel, Fire, Electric, Rock, and Poison types.
Best moveset (Larvitar)
Larvitar has a lot of strong moves, including one move that has 150 power and 90% accuracy. Here is Larvitar's best moveset. Hyper Beam leaves the opponent unable to move the next turn.
Hyper Beam | Thrash |
Outrage | Superpower |

Trivia
- Larvitar’s sprite animation changes between Pokemon Diamond and Pearl and Pokemon Platinum, but the static sprite remains the same.
- Larvitar shares a lot of behaviors and things with dinosaurs but its penchant to eat any and everything right down to the dirt may come from the legend of the Tarasque, a mythological dragon.
- Larvitar’s name is derived from larva, which fits because this is the base level of the Pokemon before any metamorphosis (evolution).
- Larvitar’s Japanese name, Angiras, seems to draw from Gojira, the Japanese word for Godzilla, the giant lizard that has terrorized Japan for decades.
FAQs
Q. Is Larvitar a rare Pokemon to find in Pokemon Go?
Larvitar is usually a rare Pokemon, though it was pretty common to find during the Johto Celebration. It has since appeared more frequently but is still fairly rare. Using Pinap Berries on Larvitar is probably a good idea since they are so rare.
Q. Did Ash own a Larvitar?
While Ash did briefly care for a Larvitar in the original series, he did not catch this Pokemon. Rather, he hatched an egg given to him. Like Haunter, because Ash did not catch it he does not technically own the Pokemon. He did, however, briefly have possession of one.
Q. Is Tyranitar Legendary?
The fully evolved form of Larvitar, Tyranitar, is a pseudo-Legendary, so no it is not. That and Kommo-o are the only pseudo-Legendary Pokemon who do not have a type immunity, though.
Q. Can Curse be added to Larvitar?
Curse can be bred onto Larvitar if it is bred with any Pokemon from the Slowpoke line (Slowpoke, Slowbro and Slowking).
Q. Where can I find Larvitar in Pokemon Sword and Shield?
In Pokemon Sword and Shield, Larvitar will only spawn in the Lake of Outrage. This is located in the northwest corner of the Wild Area, below the town of Hammerlock. It won’t spawn in the overworld, though, making it a bit of a challenge to hunt down.
Conclusion
Larvitar is a good Pokemon to have. Its final evolution, Tyranitar, is a great Pokemon to have and the best way to get one, in any game, is to find Tyranitar and evolve it to Pupitar and finally Tyranitar. Larvitar is likely based on dinosaurs and even Godzilla, making it a formidable Pokemon. Larvitar are hungry and are often eating, which is how they can get ready to evolve. They will eat dirt until they are ready.
