Introduced in generation five via the Pokemon Black and White games, Litwick is a dual type ghost and fire Pokemon. It is the base evolution of Chandelure and will evolve into Lampent upon reaching level 41. Aptly labeled as the “candle Pokemon” by the Pokedex, Litwick is a small candle that can steal your life force away. This guide will showcase Litwick’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Litwick.
About Litwick
As a generation five representative, Litwick made its first appearance in the black and white season of the anime in the episode Scare at the Litwick Mansion!. While its first evolution requires no conditions to evolve into Lampent, you will need to use a Dusk Stone on your Lampent in order to obtain a Chandelure. The Pokedex states that a Litwick is capable of using the flame on its head to absorb the life energy of people and Pokemon, using their essence as fuel.

Appearance
Litwick appears to be a small candle with a blue flame. The melted wax around the flame resembles hair and it has one small eye that can be seen and a smug smile on its face. The one eye that can be seen is bright yellow while its body is primarily white and its flame is a blueish/purple colour. Litwick is capable of extinguishing the flame on its head until it finds someone to leech its life force. They are very small at only 1 foot or 0.3 meters tall.
Behavior
Like most ghost Pokemon, Litwick appears to feed on the life essence of people and Pokemon alike. It appears to suck the life essence of the living around it to keep the flame on its head alight. The Pokedex seems to have mixed accounts of its behavior as it will mention Litwick deceiving people into believing it is a guide, while also mentioning that it will take children by the hand and guide them to the spirit world.
Strengths and Weaknesses
As a base evolution there is not much about Litwick’s base stats to write home about. Its strongest base stat lies in its special attack, but its use is almost entirely limited to a support role. With the Flame Body ability and the Will-O-Wisp move, your opponent is very likely to get burned when facing a Litwick. It is, however, weak to ground, rock, ghost, water, and dark type moves while capable of resisting poison, bug, steel, fire, grass, ice, and fairy moves.
Shiny Litwick
While there are a few similarities between regular Litwick and Shiny Litwick, the latter’s flame is more blue in colour and its one visible eye turns green. The body of Shiny Litwick remains white, so it can be difficult to distinguish between Shiny Litwick and regular Litwick. Keep an eye on its flame and its one eye to tell the difference between a regular and Shiny Litwick. Like all shiny Pokemon, Shiny Litwick gains a starry animation upon entering battle.

Best Moveset
Litwick’s role in competitive battling is almost exclusively limited to LC (Little Cup) brackets of competitive play. In this bracket, it is most typically a supporting Pokemon, coming with access to the move Trick Room. Using Litwick as a supporting Pokemon, you will want to use the ability Flame Body to at least inflict a burn effect on one opposing Pokemon. Run Memento, Trick Room, Fire Blast/Pain Split, and Will-O-Wisp to have the most success. Memento can seriously cripple an opposing Pokemon, Trick Room will activate your slow sweepers, Fire Blast and Pain Split are interchangeable as damaging options while Will-O-Wisp can ensure your team’s survival by cutting opposing Pokemon’s physical damage in half.

How to Catch Litwick in Pokemon Go
If you want to obtain a Litwick in Pokemon Go, your best bet would be to hatch as many 10 km eggs as you possibly can. While Litwick can spawn in the wild, it is a relatively rare spawn and thus, without a community event or holiday event, it can be difficult locating one in the wild. However, its spawns are boosted during the night and in foggy weather or you can also keep your eyes peeled for tier one raid bosses. Litwick has appeared there in the past but remember, it will cost 25 Litwick candy to evolve it into Lampert and another 100 to evolve it into Chandelure.
Trivia
- The name Litwick is a portmanteau of the words lit and wick (like a candle’s wick).
- Litwick is tied with Yamask for the Pokemon with the all time lowest base attack stat.
- Litwick is one of the smallest fire Pokemon, tied with Scorbunny.
FAQ
When should I evolve Lampent?
Chandelure learns no more moves naturally once it reaches this final evolution. The only way to teach your Chandelure more moves would be through methods like move tutors or TMs/HMs. You should evolve your Lampent once it has learned all the moves you want it to naturally and in a typical casual playthrough, this will involve reaching around level 55+ for Overheat.
How do you evolve Litwick?
Litwick evolves into Lampent naturally upon reaching level 41. You do not need to do anything special to evolve your Litwick. To evolve your Lampent, you will need to use a Dusk Stone on your Lampent to evolve it into Chandelure.
Is Chandelure a good Pokemon?
In terms of casual play, there is nothing wrong with having a Chandelure on your team. It is a powerful special attacking Pokemon but things change in competitive play. That is when its defensive typing catches up to it and many teams will have an answer for Chandelure. Despite this it remains relatively in the center of competitive brackets, typically floating around UU (Under Used).
Conclusion
Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this candle Pokemon. Litwick is a small ghostly candle that does not present much at face value. However, like most ghost Pokemon, it is capable of stealing your life away if you are not careful. In terms of battle, Litwick’s usability is restricted to formats where battles are only with non-evolved Pokemon. However, since its evolution line ends with Chandelure, that gives it some relevance in both competitive and casual play.
