Introduced in generation four, with the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl games, Magmortar is a monotype fire Pokemon. It is the final evolution of Magby and evolves from Magmar upon being traded with a specific item. The Pokedex classifies Magmortar as the “Blast Pokemon” which is a nod to its explosive capabilities. This guide will showcase Magmortar’s appearances in the anime, its capabilities in battle, as well as other general facts about Magmortar.
About Magmortar

Appearance
Magmortar is a bipedal and humanoid Pokemon with a red and yellow body, and patterns that resemble flames. It has two arms that extend into cannons and can launch fireballs with two flame-like ornaments on Magmortar’s shoulders as well as a fiery tail. But during the evolution process, Magmortar loses Magmar’s duck-billed mouth and instead has its mouth twisted into a constant grin. It is 5 feet and 3 inches, or 1.6 meters, tall.
Behavior
Throughout the anime, Magmortar is showcased as Paul’s (Ash’s Rival) ace Pokemon. It is shown to be reliable in taking hits and that even includes super effective moves. It will reside inside volcanic craters comfortably and only a single pair of Magmortar will inhabit one volcano. The Pokedex states that Magmortar’s breath can burn while the fireballs from its arms can reach up to 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Magmortar’s best stat is its special attack and while this might imply that it is a special attacker, it is far too slow to compete with other offensive Pokemon. Both its physical attack and special defense are respectable but while its special attack outperforms its physical attack, its health pool makes utilizing its special defense difficult. As a monotype fire Pokemon, Magmortar is 2x weak to ground, rock, and water moves. It is immune to no types but is resistant to steel, bug, fire, grass, ice, and fairy type moves.
Shiny Magmortar
A Shiny Magmortar is very distinct from a regular Magmortar as the yellow and orange body has been swapped for a bright and dark pink colour palette on Shiny Magmortar. Even the flames on Shiny Magmortar’s shoulders and its tail reflect the color palette swap. It is easy to tell the difference between regular Magmortar and Shiny Magmortar. Like all shiny Pokemon, Shiny Magmortar gains a starry animation upon entering battle.

Best Moveset
Since Magmortar’s debut in generation five, it has never risen above the lowest tiers of competitive brackets. In competitive play, Magmortar hasn’t been able to keep up with the other offensive fire types available. Nevertheless, it can offer a defensive option with the help of an Assault Vest, as a held item, as well as being able to get through wall strategies. Consider running Fire Blast, Thunderbolt, Hidden Power Grass/Focus Blast, and Flame Charge/Earthquake. Fire Blast benefits from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) while functioning as its main source of damage. Thunderbolt, Hidden Power Grass, Focus Blast, Flame Charge, and Earthquake all exist for type coverage and thus use the move that will help cover your own team’s weaknesses.

How to Catch Magmortar in Pokemon Go
If you would like to obtain a Magmortar in Pokemon Go, the easiest way is to get a Magby and eventually evolve it into Magmortar. Like most final evolution Pokemon, the final evolution is a rare spawn as compared to its base evolution. Magby can be found anywhere fire type Pokemon spawn which includes, and isn’t limited to, beaches, parks, residential, and other dry/arid climates. You can also hatch a Magby from 5 km eggs but to evolve Magby, you will need 25 candies while to evolve Magmar, you will need 100 candies and a Sinnoh Stone. Unfortunately it does not seem as if Magmortar has appeared as a raid boss in the past and thus you’ll need to do it the hard way.

Trivia
- Magmortar received the same consideration that Electivire did. They were both final evolutions that were released within the same generation and the evolution line both received a base evolution in generation two.
- The inspiration for Magmortar’s design likely comes from the Karura, a mythical salamander with duck-like features.
- The name Magmortar is likely a combination of the words magma and mortar.
FAQ
Who is a better Pokemon: Electivire or Magmortar?
They have been comparable throughout their history but Electivire managed to reach the top tiers when rain based teams were prevalent in the meta. However, it has dropped down to the lowest tiers recently, joining Magmotar. They both function as marginally defensive Pokemon with offensive capabilities. Electivire is the physical attacking option while Magmortar is a special attacking option.
How does Magmar evolve into Magmortar?
To evolve your Magmar into Magmortar, you will need to trade Magmar while it is holding the Magmarizer. Once the Magmar has been traded, the person receiving the Magmar just needs to allow the evolution animation to play without pressing the “B” button and just like that, you’ll have a Magmortar.
Is Magmar better than Magmortar?
It would be difficult to find a case where the middle evolution is stronger than the final evolution and the same principle applies here. Magmortar has stronger base stats than Magmar by 45 total base stats. But, in this case, you could argue that Magmar is faster than Magmortar although it is still not enough to outperform its evolution.
Conclusion
Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Blast Pokemon”. While Magmortar’s impact on the competitive environment is limited, it is a fairly unique Pokemon. Its evolution line began with the middle evolution in generation one, received a base evolution in generation two and finally Magmortar was released in generation four. Magmortar serves as an example that the developers have never forgotten any of the Pokemons that have been released.
