Appearance
Marill is a small blue bipedal Pokemon that is almost spherical with a white belly, round ears with red insides. Marill's arms and feet are very short, with no visible toes and at the tip of its toothed black tail is a blue bubble-shaped ball.
Behavior
Marill's sensitive ears can detect distant sounds while its tail is flexible and stretchable, and the ball on the tip of its tail is filled with oil. That, much like a buoy, helps to keep Marill afloat while it is swimming and when it attacks, the ball on the tip of its tail glows. Not only that, in the anime, Mariel is shown to be able to bounce on its tail. Thanks to its waterproof coating, Marill can swim in strong currents without resistance from water. In addition to catching food with fishing, it also feeds on aquatic plants. When immersed in water, you can see its tail swaying on the surface of the water and when fishing along the edge of a fast-moving stream, it fixes its tail to a tree. Furthermore, it lives by the water on the water's edge and will never catch a cold after swimming in cold water, because its waterproof jacket dries out quickly.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Marill has average stats with a high HP stat, a low attack and special attack stats. Not only that, before the introduction of fairy-types Marill was weak to grass and electric-types, and was resistant to steel, fire, water, and ice-types. After the introduction of fairy-types, Marill is now weak to poison, grass, and electric-type moves, immune to dragon-types and resistant to fighting, bug, fire, water, ice, and dark-types.
Best moveset
Aqua Jet is the main STAB (same-type attack bonus) move for Marill and gives it move priority. This allows it to bypass Pokemon that would otherwise be able to revenge kill it before it can boost its attack to the max with the move Belly Drum. Play Rough is another STAB move that serves as type coverage alongside Knock Off.

How to catch Marill in Pokemon Go?
As a fairy-type Pokemon, Marill can be best found at local landmarks, hospitals, shopping malls, churches or the cemetery especially during cloudy weather. Due to its water-typing, Marill can also be found more often near canals, lakes, beaches, rivers, wetlands, and basins, with its spawn increasing during rain. Marill can be evolved from Azurill by giving it 25 candies and further evolved into Azumarill with an additional 25 candies.
Trivia
- Marill's early design had a pink body instead of blue, noticeably smaller ears and lacked the erratic tail pattern
- Prior to the release of Pokemon Gold and Silver, Marill was incorrectly referred to as "Pikablu",due to its slight resemblance to Pikachu
- Marill is referred to as "Pikablu" on the Topps trading cards for the first movie
- Marill is tied with Togepi and its pre-evolution, Azurill for having the lowest base attack of any fairy-type Pokemon, with Marill and Azurill both having the lowest base special attack of any fairy-type Pokemon
- Because Azurill's gender ratio does not match the gender ratio of its evolved forms and its evolution is not dependent on gender (being female 75% of the time while Marill and Azumarill are female only 50% of the time), a female Azurill has a one in three chance of evolving into a male Marill prior to Generation VI. This will happen is determined by its personality value and Azurill is the only Pokemon to ever do this
- Marill's name was originally spelled Marril, which is shown in some merchandise for the first movie
- Marill is the only Pokemon that evolves from a baby Pokemon which also has a level requirement for a further evolution
- Marill may be based on a combination of a mouse and a beach ball or possibly a personal flotation device or lifebuoy, with Marill’s body and ears resembling a water molecule
- Marill may also be based around the rakali (Hydromys chrysogaster), who live in burrows on the banks of rivers, lakes, and estuaries, and are more commonly known as water rats
- Marill's name, shiny color scheme, and its tail might also indicate that it is based on marimo, also known as lake balls or moss balls, which are free-floating, spherical balls of algae
- Marill and Maril may be a combination of 丸い marui (round or circular) or 鞠 mari (ball), 瑠璃 ruri (lapis lazuli), and possibly rill (a small river or brook)
