Introduced in generation three, with the Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire games, Metang is a dual type steel and psychic Pokemon. It is the second stage evolution of its three stage evolution line and evolves from Beldum once it reaches the level threshold and then evolves into Metagross once it reaches the level threshold. Metang is classified by the Pokedex as the “Iron Claw Pokemon” which may be a nod to its general design. This guide will showcase Metang’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Metang.
About Metang
As a generation three Pokemon, Metang first appeared in the Ruby and Sapphire season of the anime in the episode Saved by the Beldum. In this episode, Morrison’s Beldum evolved while it was battling Jump’s Electabuzz. Metang is the second stage evolution of its three stage evolution line and it evolves from Beldum at level 20 and into Metagross when it reaches level 45. The Pokedex mentions that Metang is formed when two Beldum fuse together and that it is capable of psychokinetic power.

Appearance
Metang seems to be two Beldum fused together and connected to a larger metal piece. Both of Metang’s arms seem to be made from Beldum while its disc-shaped body is formed by the process of the two Beldum combining. Most of its body is teal, but its large nose and spiked claws are white. It has two red eyes with black pupils and some metal plates sticking out of its body. Metang is an average sized Pokemon at 3 feet and 11 inches, or 1.2 meters, tall.
Behavior
Metang is formed when two Bledum are fused together. The two Pokemon’s nervous systems link together to form a stronger psychokinetic power, but it does not become much smarter. With its new psychic prowess, it is capable of flying over 60 miles per hour, levitating and it can prevent prey from escaping through psychic powers. Its steel claws can rip through steel. Metang can be found in the wild near rough terrains and tall mountains while pursuing Nosepass for its magnetic materials.
Strengths and Weaknesses
As a second stage evolution, Metang has some more work to do before it reaches its full potential. Its physical defense and special defense are respectable for a second stage evolution and its physical attack can help it keep up in battle. Unfortunately, its health pool and its speed stat can make it difficult for Metang to succeed in battle. As a dual type steel and psychic Pokemon, Metang takes 2x damage from ground, ghost, fire, and dark type moves. It is immune to poison type moves and resistant to normal, flying, rock, steel, grass, psychic, ice, dragon, and fairy type moves.
Best Moveset
In competitive play, Metang is most commonly used in lower bracket formats. It has a good defensive typing and can provide significant damage through STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) moves. With an Eviolite, as a held item, and the Clear Body ability, Metang can hold its own in battle and prevent stat changes from going through. Consider running Stealth Rock, Meteor Mash, Earthquake/Bullet Punch, and Bullet Punch/Pursuit. The damage from Stealth Rock adds up quickly, Meteor Mash benefits from STAB, Earthquake/Bullet Punch are interchangeable as type coverage or as a priority move respectively, and Bullet Punch/Pursuit are interchangeable as ways to interact with your opponent’s turn order.

How to Catch Metang in Pokemon Go?
If you would like to obtain a Metang in Pokemon Go, the easiest way to do so would be to first obtain a Beldum and eventually evolve it into Metang. Like most evolved Pokemons, its base evolution spawns more commonly in the wild as compared to its final evolution. You can find Beldum spawning in the wild at a boosted rate near industrial sites, factories, railroad stations, and rocky areas. Beldum can also be hatched from 5, 7, and 10 km eggs, and you can also find Beldum spawning as a tier one raid boss, Metang as a tier three raid boss, and Metagross as a tier three raid boss at Pokemon Gyms. To evolve Beldum into Metang you will need 25 candies and another 100 to evolve into Metagross.
Trivia
- Though Metang appears to be floating and its floating is mentioned by the Pokedex, Metang cannot have the ability Levitate.
- The inspiration for Metang’s design seems to be based on flying saucers or crabs.
- The name Metang is a combination of the word metal and tang (the onomatopoeia for metal being hit).
FAQ
Why is Metagross bad?
Metagross is not a bad Pokemon, it is one of the strongest Pokemon to ever be released. A lot of players find it boring or predictable to go against Metagross as it is a common Pokemon to encounter in competitive play. With its high base stats, potential damage and powerful defensive typing, Metagross can prove to be a dangerous Pokemon.
What level does Metang evolve?
Metang will evolve into Metagross once it reaches level 45 as there are no other unique evolution conditions to fulfill and Metang will begin to evolve once it reaches the level threshold. A Beldum will evolve into Metang once it reaches level 20. Again there are no special conditions to fulfill other than reaching the level threshold.
Is Metang Legendary?
Metang and Beldum are not legendary Pokemon. Metagross is technically not a legendary Pokemon either, but it is referred to as a pseudo-legendary Pokemon. Its base stats are strong enough to compete with other legendaries, it can typically only be encountered once per save-file, however, you can breed Beldum, Metang, and Metagross at a Pokemon Daycare.
Conclusion
Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Iron Claw Pokemon”. While Metang is not the most powerful Pokemon on its own, it does eventually evolve into one of the strongest Pokemon ever released into the franchise. Metang requires some experience investment in order to reach its full potential, but it is rare for a Pokemon to meet many different criteria for being powerful. Reserve a slot on your team for Metang to have a powerful offensive/defensive steel and psychic type Pokemon.
