The Pokemon GO August Community Day for 2024 has been confirmed to take place on August 31, and it heralds the return of a beloved starter from the Alola region. From 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm local time on the day, trainers will have the opportunity to catch the Alolan Water-type starter Popplio, and for the first time, they'll be able to encounter its indigo and coral pink-colored shiny variant.
Popplio was introduced to Niantic's mobile title during the Welcome to Alola event in March 2022. However, its return to prominence during the Pokemon GO August Community Day will certainly excite players, especially now that its shiny form is available to capture as well.

While the Pokemon GO August Community Day 2024 takes place on August 31 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm local time, Popplio will appear much more often in the wild. Not only does this provide an excellent opportunity for trainers to catch Water-type starter Pokemon, but the sheer number of spawns should make finding at least one shiny Popplio a relatively simple process during the event.
Moreover, if trainers evolve their Popplio into Brionne and ultimately Primarina, their Primarina will know the powerful Charged Attack Hydro Cannon. This move possesses 80 power in PvP while having a slightly higher damage output of 90 in PvE situations like gym assaults/defenses and raids.
Additionally, from the event onward, Primarina will be able to learn the Charged Attack Sparkling Aria, which possesses 80 power in PvP and 85 in PvE. This gives the starter access to powerful Water-type and Fairy-type Charged Moves and improves its overall combat effectiveness going forward. It's possible that its PvE and PvP profile may increase as a result.
Like previous Pokemon GO Community Days, this event will also feature a $1 USD Special Research Story, though the creature of focus will be Popplio. The research should provide plenty of rewards, including more Popplio encounters, which might be useful for collecting more candy from it for evolution or finding more of its shiny variants.
Moreover, from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm local time after the Pokemon GO August Community Day has concluded, trainers will be able to take on Tier-4 raids featuring Popplio's first evolution Brionne.
Completing these raids will cause even more Popplio to spawn around the gym where the battles were hosted, giving trainers even more opportunities to catch it, collect its candies, and obtain its shiny form.
Field Research Tasks will also be available for the event that, when completed, can offer rewards, including Great Balls, Stardust, and additional Popplio encounters.
The following event bonuses will also be in effect throughout the runtime of the Pokemon GO August Community Day for 2024:
- Double candy rewards for catching Pokemon.
- Triple XP rewards for catching Pokemon.
- Double chance for players at Level 31 and above to receive Candy XL from catching Pokemon.
- Lure Modules activated during the event will last for three hours.
- Incense activated during the event will also last three hours, though this doesn't apply to Daily Adventure Incense.
- An event-themed photobomb Pokemon will appear when taking snapshots.
- One additional Special Trade can be made, up to a maximum of three on the day of the event. This effect will remain active from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm local time.
- Trades will have their costs reduced by 50%.
It's still a while out from August 31, but there's no doubt that this Pokemon GO August Community Day should be an entertaining one and is likely to be quite rewarding.
