Pokemon GO Dynamax Special Research reportedly getting reset

The Pokemon GO To The Max Special Research — which provides Dynamax Pokemon encounters — is reportedly resetting itself, and players are getting stuck on step 1 of the questline. This research was made available yesterday (September 4, 2024), along with Power Spots becoming active.

The issue has been reported several times across social media like Reddit and X. Niantic has finally confirmed that it is aware of the problem and investigating the same.

Pokemon GO To The Max Special Research reset leaving players stuck on step 1

For some players, the To The Max Special Research is being reset to step 1 in Pokemon GO. Gamers have reported that they received prompts stating "Streak Broken" in the lower-right corner and noticed that the questline progress had been reset.

Niantic addressed the situation earlier today (September 5, 2024) on the @NianticHelp X channel:

"Trainers, we appreciate the feedback and inquiries regarding the reset issue with the 'To the Max!' Special Research. We are currently investigating this issue and we apologize for any inconvenience caused."

The developers will likely provide a bonus once they figure out what caused the issue and fix it. We saw something similar when they provided compensation for the GO Fest 2024 Special Background issue late in August 2024.

(September 7, 2024): Niantic updated that it has fixed the issue and that affected trainers will find steps 1 and 2 of the To The Max Special Research automatically completed. Learn more about this here.

Other than that, trainers can currently participate in the GO All Out Collection Challenges and the Galar Calling Special Research as the Pokemon GO Max Out season starts. We will see the debuts of several Dynamax Pokemon too since the Gen VIII battle mechanic has finally made its way to the game.
