Pokemon GO players are reportedly getting banned if they interact with Team GO Rocket more than a stipulated number of times. This was reported by u/Faladyne on The Silph Road subreddit, a well-known community of Pokemon GO trainers. Their initial post four days ago reported that their account was banned after 160 Team GO Rocket encounters.

u/Faladyne said this limit was lifted in the same post. However, they made a new post about 14 hours ago, stating they managed to attract a ban with less than 100 encounters this time.

With the ongoing Adventure Week Taken Over event spawning Team GO Rocket more frequently in balloons (although balloon encounters are apparently not being counted in this case) and at PokeStops, the reported limit is a cause of concern for players if true.

The Sportskeeda Pokemon GO team hasn't been able to replicate this ban, but they are quite some numbers off the limit being discussed in the community.

Pokemon GO reportedly has a limit on Team GO Rocket encounters, crossing it attracts bans

While it was initially thought any Team GO Rocket encounter limit crossing that attracted a ban had been lifted with Pokemon GO Adventure Week Taken Over rolling in, the latest u/Faladyne post raises questions about whether that's at all the case.

Other Pokemon GO content creators have also been reporting a similar story, with the latest limit being rumored to be well below 100 and somewhere around 50 Team GO Rocket encounters.

Furthermore, ZoëTwoDots, a YouTuber covering Pokemon GO, stated that even spinning PokeStops with Team GO Rocket is being counted towards the encounter limit.

Once the limit is hit, players are reportedly seeing Pokemon GO's own blue screen of death, reading:

"We have detected unusual activity from your account. As a result, temporary limitations have been placed on your play."

Without any official confirmation from Niantic regarding the issue, it's difficult to ascertain the veracity of the claim that there is a Team GO Rocket encounter limit. Nevertheless, there are plenty of trainers in the community who are reporting that they have been hit with a ban once they started interacting with a large number of Team GO Rocket Grunts.

Even if such a limit exists, it seems unfair to have it set to such a low number, especially with the Adventure Week Taken Over event going on. While the reported limit might have been put in place to counter Pokemon GO spoofing, it can end up penalizing players for engaging with ongoing event's increased Team GO Rocket presence.

We did reach out to Niantic to know if the developer has any official stance on these reported bans but haven't heard anything yet. We will update this post if there's any further development on the matter.

Update (August 13, 2024): We heard back from Niantic stating that they are currently looking into the matter.
