Pokemon TCG Pocket has already been downloaded over 10 million times worldwide, according to Serebii.net on X. The game made its worldwide debut on October 30, 2024, after being available for around a month for New Zealand players. Available only on Android and iOS, the title skipped Nintendo Switch at launch.
With this latest venture, The Pokemon Company attempted to bring the widely popular physical card collecting, trading, and battling game to a digital handheld format with an easier-to-get-into gameplay.
With over six million people having pre-registered worldwide before launch, it is no surprise that TCG Pocket is quickly amassing a huge number of players and downloads.

Pokemon TCG Pocket entices millions of players with an original expansion and streamlined battle mechanics
Pokemon TCG Pocket currently has only one expansion - Genetic Apex. This is an original set that is not available as physical cards as of now. It squarely focuses on the Original 151 along with Kanto's eight Gym Leaders. There are three Booster Packs available right now - Pikachu, Charizard, and Mewtwo.

According to Bulbapedia, the illustrations are drawn from Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. The Kanto theme is also evident in the Genetic Apex Themed Missions available in-game (Viridian Forest collection requiring players to collect cards for Pokemon spawning in Viridian Forest).
The community response to the game has largely been positive, with the app enjoying 4.6 and 4.9 ratings on the Play Store and the App Store, respectively. In my brief time in-game, the gameplay felt quite easy to grasp for beginners, and the mechanics didn't force you to invest real-life money.
I was able to quickly collect more than 100+ cards in less than a day, including the coveted Mewtwo EX (crown rarity) card. With so much to do and the ease of getting into the game, TCG Pocket's popularity will likely keep increasing among players, amateur or otherwise.
For now, the only commonly reported issue seems to be a trouble with iOS 18.1 users, where the app refuses to open and redirects players to their home screen. Thankfully, the official X channel posted that the developers have already started investigating the matter.
