Pidove is classified by the Pokedex as the “Tiny Pigeon Pokemon” which may be a nod to its general design. This guide will showcase Pidove’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Pidove.

About Pidove

As a generation five Pokemon, Pidove first appeared in the Black and White Series of the anime in the episode Ash and Trip’s Third Battle!. In this episode, Ash’s rival Trip attempts to catch Pidove. However, Ash startles the Pidove, allowing it to run away before Trip can capture it. The Pokedex mentions that Pidove uses the bumps on its head to make waves in the water and earthquakes on the land.

Appearance

Pidove is a small gray Pokemon that resembles a pigeon and most of its body is varying shades of gray, but there is a small pink section on its beak. It has two yellow eyes with black pupils and there is a heart shaped coloration on its chest. Pidove has two small black wings with a gray band striped through the middle. It also has two bird’s feet and each of its feet have three talons each. It is a small Pokemon at only 1 foot, or 0.3 meters, tall.

Behavior

In the anime, Ash was suddenly attacked by a flock of Pidove that flew away. He ended up catching a Pidove that was left behind. This Pidove evolved into a Tranquil and then an Unfezant, which acted as a confident battler on his team. In the wild, Pidove and its evolution line are known to be helpful Pokemon. They can sometimes follow commands, but they will fail to understand complex orders. Pidove has also grown accustomed to people which makes them common in parks and plazas.

Strengths and Weaknesses

As a base evolution Pokemon, there are not many impressive strengths regarding Pidove. Its physical attack is its strongest stat, but all of its stats are somewhat mediocre even for a base evolution Pokemon. It is capable of using Tailwind which can provide a lasting speed buff for its team. As a dual type normal and flying Pokemon, Pidove takes 2x damage from rock, electric, and ice type moves. It is immune to ghost and ground type moves, and will resist grass and bug type moves.

Best Moveset

In competitive play, Pidove is typically only seen in the LC (Little Cup) bracket of competitive play. Since it has access to Tailwind, it can provide a valuable supportive role in setting up your other aggressive Pokemon. With the Super Luck ability, it can deal significant damage itself. Consider running Tailwind, Aerial Ace, Hidden Power Grass/U-Turn, and Return. Tailwind will provide a helpful buff to the active Pokemon, Aerial Ace will not miss and stacks with Pidove’s Super Luck ability, Hidden Power Grass/U-Turn are interchangeable as a more damaging move or as an efficient swap, finally Return can be used to deal significant damage against most Pokemon.

How to Catch Pidove in Pokemon Go?

If you would like to obtain a Pidove in Pokemon Go, there are many different ways of doing so. As a base evolution Pokemon, you can find it easily in the wild. Since Pidove is a flying type Pokemon, it will spawn more often in countryside, farm, field, forest, park, and playground locations. You can also hatch Pidove from 2, 5, and 7 km eggs. Not only that, Pidove can be found as a tier one raid boss, and Tranquil can be found as a tier three raid boss at Pokemon Gyms. To evolve Pidove into Tranquil it will take 12 candies while Tranquil requires another 50 candies to evolve into Unfezant.

Trivia

  1. Pidove is the only Pokemon in the entire franchise to have a base stat total of 264.
  2. The inspiration for Pidove’s design seems to be a combination of pigeons and doves.
  3. The name Pidove is a combination of the words pigeon and dove.

FAQ

Is Pidove a dove?

The likely explanation for Pidove’s origins is a combination of a pigeon and a dove. Its name contains elements of both and its design seems to resemble a cross between a pigeon and a dove. The pink spot around its beak implies it is a dove, but growing accustomed to humans is more pigeon behavior. The Pokedex classifies Pidove as the “Tiny Pigeon Pokemon” which is likely due to its behavior.

At what level does Pidove evolve?

Pidove will evolve into Tranquil once it reaches level 21. Once it has become a Tranquil it can evolve into Unfezant upon reaching level 32. There are no special conditions to fulfill for this evolution line and they will evolve at their respective level thresholds.

What region is Pidove from?

Pidove is a generation five Pokemon, making it a Pokemon from Unova. In Black and White 2, Pidove would spawn in areas where people were found. It could be found in Floccesy Ranch, Virbank Complex, and Castalia City which goes along well with its Pokedex description.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Tiny Pigeon Pokemon”. While Pidove and its evolution line have not made the biggest impact on competitive play, it still maintains relevance as one of Ash’s main Pokemon during his journey in Unova. Pidove is not entirely useless, and it can help set up your offensive Pokemon for success. Reserve a slot on your team for Pidove to have a supportive normal and flying type Pokemon.
