In the Pokemon anime, Brock was the first gym leader that series protagonist Ash Ketchum ever defeated. However, Brock was much more than that, becoming one of Ash's longest and most stalwart companions during multiple stages of his journey. While he might have had bad luck with women, there were several moments in the anime that allowed Brock to truly shine as an individual.
With that in mind, it doesn't hurt to take a look at some of Brock's finest moments in the Pokemon anime that exemplified the brilliance of his character. Several episodes meet the criteria, but a select few go above and beyond.

Five Pokemon anime episodes that showed Brock's brilliance as a character
1) The Brockster is In!
After a group of Pokemon Nursery occupants are poisoned by a wrathful Tentacruel, this episode sees Brock spring into action to help. At this point in the story, Brock has been a trainer and Pocket Monster breeder for years, and he knows how to look after countless species. His knowledge proves to be a huge help, allowing him to cure the majority of the Pocket Monsters at the nursery.
With some creativity, ingenuity, and advice from Nurse Joy, Brock's compassion and effort allow his Happiny to evolve into Chansey. This may be one of the finest examples of Brock's path as a Pocket Monster caretaker and doctor before it was fully realized.
2) Malice in Wonderland!
If Brock is known for anything in the Pokemon anime, it's his hopeless pursuit of women, particularly Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny. This episode gave Brock everything he could have ever dreamed of: Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny and their siblings falling madly in love with him. However, Brock, as enamored as he was with these characters, knew something wasn't right.
He was right, of course, realizing that his romantic fantasies were being created as an illusion by a particularly mischievous Mismagius who had hypnotized the gang. Fortunately, Brock's realization that his dream was fake allowed him to break out of the illusion and alert Ash and Dawn. The group then worked together to convince the Mismagius that they didn't wish to exist in a dream world.
3) When Regions Collide!
By this point in the overall Pokemon anime series, fans hadn't seen Brock show off his battle abilities for some time. However, they were in for quite a treat in this episode, where Brock and Misty arrived in Alola to battle against Ash and his classmates. Brock's shining moment was against the Fiery Kiawe, and the former Rock-type gym leader showed he still knew the ropes.
Thanks to his newly revealed ability to Mega Evolve Steelix, Brock handled Kiawe relatively easily, showing that he hadn't lost his edge over time. He may not have become a master trainer, but Brock knew what he was doing in the battle arena, and it was refreshing to see that Brock still had his battle ability after so many years.
4) A Family That Battles Together Stays Together!
After what seemed like ages away from the Pewter City gym, Ash and Brock returned to find that his mother Lola had turned the gym into a Water-type gym. This couldn't stand, but Brock's family couldn't do much to stop it. As a result, Brock challenged his mother to a battle for the fate of the Pewter City gym, to ensure it remained a Rock-type gym for the foreseeable future.
Despite being at a type disadvantage against Lola's Mantine, Brock's Onix wins the match, securing the future of the gym and allowing his family to return to their traditions. As Ash and Brock head back to Hoenn, Brock's little brother Forrest is determined to battle him the next time they meet. This episode showed that no matter what, Brock stood by his gym and his family through and through.
5) Heart of Fire! Heart of Stone!
Brock's romantic pursuits had been very hit-and-miss (mostly miss) by this point in the Pokemon anime, but Brock finally had a little success thanks to a change in strategy. During a visit to Akala Island, Brock begins to fantasize about meeting the Rock-type kahuna Olivia, though the latter is initially not interested like so many of Brock's potential romantic interests.
Things change when Brock mentions his love for Rock-type creatures and his former status as a gym leader, causing Olivia to give Brock a chance. When Team Rocket intervenes, the two even team up to use a Rock-type Z-Move to defeat them. Unfortunately, Brock and Misty had to leave Alola as their vacation was ending, but maybe Brock and Olivia kept in touch behind the scenes.
