The final of the Pokemon GO World Championships saw trainers Yekai0904 and Inadequance going head-to-head in a best-of-3 battle using the Great League format, as is standard with official events for the mobile game. Yekai0904 came out on top with a score of 3 to 1.

One of Yekai0904's best defensive plays of the set came in the second match, where he switched in his Charjabug at the very last moment to save his Skarmory, an important damage dealer on his team for the set. This led to Charjabug tanking a vital Surf and taking down Lanturn, allowing Skarmory to hold on to the energy it generated beforehand.

To make such a perfect defensive play like this, Yekai0904 likely remembered the timing between Surfs from Lantern, allowing him to potentially know when exactly to switch to Charjabug for the perfect defensive switch. While he could have just gotten lucky, this was an incredibly smart play to make.

The second highlight featured Yekai0904 using his Lickitung to finish off Inadequance's Giratina, making him the world champion for 2024. While this may seem a bit unusual to fans of the main series, or to those who may not indulge in Pokemon GO's competitive scene, the reason why Lickitung was in a much more advantageous position over Giratina is due to the Great League format used for this battle.

Due to Giratina having a much higher minimum combat power, thanks to it being a Legendary Pokemon, it can level up much less than other viable monsters in the tier like Lickitung, Lanturn, and Wigglytuff. This means Lickitung can be at a much higher level than Giratina, potentially having higher stats as a result.

In addition to this, Yekai0904's Lickitung had the Fast Attack, Lick. This move is a Ghost-type attack, meaning it does super-effective damage against Giratina, who is a Ghost and Dragon-type. With this, one could clearly see that Yekai0904 had the match on lockdown, securing the win for the champion title.
