Pokemon GO's Ultra Unlock: Better Together event brought two new monsters into the popular mobile game. Tandemaus and its evolution, Maushold, are two new monsters from the Paldea region, making them one of the newest in the entire franchise. With these monsters being so new to the mobile game, some players may have questions.
Some players may not know that Maushold actually has an additional rarer form it can evolve into from Tandemaus. The standard variety most players are likely familiar with is the Family of 4 form, but it can also come in its Family of 3 variant very rarely. Here is everything to know about this new evolution.

Maushold is a pure Normal-type in Pokemon GO, meaning it is vulnerable to Fighting-type attacks, while greatly resisting Ghost-type attacks. Unfortunately, Maushold's signature move from the main series, Population Bomb, is not present in Niantic's mobile spin-off, but it still has access to some decent Normal-type moves.
In regards to Maushold's form, players have no control over which form it will take. However, the Family of 3 form only had a 1% chance of appearing in the main series, so it may be safe to assume that this is left consistent in Niantic's mobile spin-off. There is no way for players to tell which form their Tandemaus will take before evolving it.
That being said, the rarer Family of 3 variant has no competitive advantage over the Family of 4 form. The difference between the two is purely cosmetic. There is also no way to change its form either, like players can do with Furfrou in exchange for candies and Stardust. Players will also need 50 Tandemaus candies to evolve Tandemaus into Maushold as well.

Maushold's stats, on the other hand, are fairly underwhelming. With a low base stat total, it could have potential in Great League as its 1,500 combat power limit is closer to Maushold's maximum combat power total, allowing it to level up more. However, its viability is significantly harmed by the mobile game's lack of utility.
In the main series, Maushold was a popular pick for competitive play due to its high synergy with items, stat boosts, and its signature move, Population Bomb. Without this type of assistance, Maushold remains a relatively normal creature with nothing special about it. However, it is still new and untested in many competitive forms, so this could change down the line.
Overall, Maushold is a very interesting creature with a special variant of evolution purely for the sake of giving collectors something to hunt for. There are no differences between these forms in terms of stats or movepool, so those interested in using it for competitive play will not have to worry about farming for this rare variant.
